'Bald Crows idiot': Kane Cornes explains fan sledge in Adelaide's loss to Hawthorn image

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has explained the back story behind his spray at a Crows fan after Adelaide's semi-final loss to Hawthorn on Friday night.

The Crows came into the finals series as one of the premiership favourites, but limped out meekly in straight sets after defeats to Collingwood and the Hawks.

Footage emerged online of Cornes yelling "see ya mate" towards an Adelaide fan who appeared to be leaving the game in the third quarter.

Cornes, a premiership player in his 300 games with the Power, has detailed the reasons for his outburst on SEN's Monday Fireball.

"This was extraordinary," he began. “I was with Dwayne (Russell) ... we were in a good mood and ready for a big semi-final.

“The national anthem started and I stand up like any respectful Australian would stand up during the national anthem.

"And this middle-aged bald Crows idiot with a Crows jumper on, halfway through the national anthem, turns around and looks at our commentary box and starts screaming at me to stand up.

“Am I stupid or what, I’m pretty sure I’m standing up. I said ‘I am standing up you clown’."

With Russell believing it was an attempted crack at his colleague's height, Cornes continued: "(Dwayne) thought it was a short joke because there was no other logical explanation for it, so I was giving him a few death stares and we move on.

“Halfway through the third quarter, my magnificent social media guru Bear from Channel 7 was sitting in the media box (next) to me and taps on the window and says ‘look he’s leaving’.

"So I just couldn’t resist, I had to give him a little bit of a send-off and he refused to engage.

“That’s OK, he can crawl back under the rock he’s been under for the last seven years at Adelaide.”

That last comment was an added crack at the Crows' lack of success since their 2017 grand final defeat to Richmond.

The team did take huge strides this season under Matthew Nicks and will be focusing on a deeper run next year.

It remains to be seen if the Crows fan - who Cornes challenged to come on his show - tries to fire any more shots in the direction of the media boxes.
