Premiership defender Steven May will need to find a third club to continue his AFL career after a report emerged the Demons are ready to part ways with the veteran.

May has played 251 games over 15 seasons in the league, 123 with the Suns and 128 with Melbourne, where he became a two-time All-Australian and a flag winner in 2021.

But Channel 9 reporter Tom Morris said the Demons are keen to turn to youth under new coach Steven King and are hoping a new club will pick up the final year of his contract in 2026.

“Melbourne has told Steven May, the premiership defender and two-time All-Australian, to have a look around,” Morris said on SEN Afternoons.

“May was such a key plank of the Demons’ defensive unit in their premiership and successful finals era.

"Melbourne have told him as recently as today that they want to prioritise youth in that position. As a result he should have a look (elsewhere).

“People will assume that the Dogs are keen, but the Dogs aren’t keen on Steven May. They’ve got their eyes elsewhere.

“I’m looking at clubs like North Melbourne or whoever else needs a key defender.”

A durable defender over the past five seasons, May was limited to 16 games in 2025 due to injury and suspension issues.

Turning 34 in January, it is likely the former Gold Coast skipper still has more in the tank to add to his impressive career to date.
