AFL legend Matthew Richardson has praised Melbourne's decision to appoint Steven King as their new head coach, saying it's the right move by the club.
King was announced as the Demons head coach on Friday, beating out former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley for the role.
After playing 240 AFL games for Geelong and St Kilda, King has spent the last 15 years as an assistant coach, working with the Western Bulldogs, Gold Coast and most recently Geelong.
Richardson is confident the 46-year-old is ready to take the reins of an AFL club.

"He's ticked every box," Richardson said on 3AW Melbourne.
"He's been an assistant coach now for 15 years...been to different clubs, seen different cultures, different environments.
"I think it's a great appointment."
Richardson also believes the Demons have made the right decision in appointing a first time head coach.
"Melbourne have had recent success where they've gone out and appointed a first time coach, who had a good resume as an assistant in Simon Goodwin and they won a flag," he said.
"So they know that model works as well.
"This is nothing against Nathan Buckley because I actually think he will be a really good coach second time around.
"But history says it doesn't often work the second time around either, so I don't think it's the wrong appointment from Melbourne at all."
