AFL journeyman retires: Falls short of equalling bizarre record image

James Aish is not a name that is brought up often in AFL circles, but his journey is as unique as they come.

His career included 186 games across three different teams - Brisbane, Collingwood and Fremantle - from three different states.

Only one player in AFL history has ever played for four AFL teams from four different states: former Gold Coast, St Kilda, West Coast, and Sydney ruckman Tom Hickey.

The three-clubs-from-three-states journeyman list is also extremely short, with names such as Hugh Greenwood, Sam Jacobs, and Jesse Hogan.

Aish also makes that list, but he almost joins Hickey in the four-state category when you consider his junior football.

Aish was drafted out of South Australia with pick seven in the 2013 draft, after winning back-to-back SANFL premierships with Norwood.

Although he did not play for any AFL-level clubs in South Australia, Aish still registered 24 first-class games in SA, meaning he and Tom Hickey are the only players in AFL history to have played AFL/state level football in four different states.

Furthermore, the Aish name is synonymous with South Australian football.

Aish became the first SANFL premiership player under 17 years of age at 16 years and 334 days old.

Such a record should not be a surprise, being the son of former SANFL Norwood midfielder Andrew Aish, the nephew of 1981 Magarey Medal winner Michael Aish, and the grandson of former Norwood captain Peter Aish.

James Aish officially retired today after 186 games across every corner of Australia but has struggled with injuries and consistency in recent seasons.

“It’s been a privilege to have played across three really good teams in three states,” said Aish.

“It’s brought great challenges with moving, meeting new teammates and playing new positions, but it's also been a blessing to meet great people along the way.”

So, keep Aish in mind the next time you play Gridley.
