The AFL Coaches Association is an award voted by the 18 coaching panels on a 5,4,3,2,1 basis after each home and away game.

A maximum amount of votes one player can get is 10, if both coaches opt to award him with the five votes.

It's designed to acknowledge the efforts by an individual player throughout the season from the perspective of the coaches.

An award traditionally dominated by midfielders, there has been a few instances when this was not the case.

In 2018, Melbourne's Max Gawn won the award with 97 votes, beating Patrick Cripps (91) and Tom Mitchell (88), who went on to win the Brownlow Medal.

The time before that was back in 2006, where Adam Goodes shared the accolade with midfielder Simon Goodwin.

Barry Hall (2005) and Warren Tredrea (2004) were also worthy winners.
