His brief reign as Manchester United manager may be under immense threat, but Louis Van Gaal has remained as outspoken as ever.

So much so that he agreed to an interview with Fox Sports Australia, in which he discussed what motivated his Premier League move, United's young guns and well, a former Aussie star.

But which Socceroo endears Van Gaal?

Cahill? Jedinak? Luongo? Of course not... It's Brett bloody Holman!

Anti-climax? Perhaps so, but it is the dogged, determined nature of Holman's play that attracts the United manager to Australia.

“I want to see the culture of Australia and the people,” he told Daniel Garb of Fox Sports Australia.

“Because Brett Holman is an example of Australian mentality and I hope to see every one of your spectators in Australia.”

Van Gaal became familair with the ex Socceroos winger during his days managing Eredivisie giants AZ Alkmaar, where Holman spent four seasons.

Failing to remember Tim Cahill's name, Van Gaal instead praised "The striker" who scored the goal against his Netherlands side at the 2014 World Cup.

“The striker … I now forgot his name … he made a fantastic goal,” he said.

“We have to come back in the game. It was a fantastic game.”

United are currently locked in a battle for fourth place with local rivals Manchester City - a Champions League place at stake for both sides.
