The first-ever running of the Sydney marathon as a major has come to an end, with record-breaking performances highlighting a historic event.
Among the racers was Eliud Kipchoge, the man widely recognised as the GOAT of distance running, competing in his 23rd career marathon.
But while he didn't come away with another race win, the Kenyan star is pleased with his performance in the all-new event.
Eliud Kipchoge 'happy' with maiden Sydney marathon finish
Eliud Kipchoge has finished ninth in his first running of the Sydney marathon, the 23rd completed marathon of a star-studded career.
After finishing the event, the 40-year-old said that the result mattered to him less than the experience, competing Down Under for the first time.
"I’m happy to go across the finish line. I have nothing to prove," Kipchoge said.
"My mission is to bring all the people together. Let us surpass 55,000 [competitors], actually, next year to run here.
"It’s a beautiful course. It’s a course whereby there is no other in this world."
Kiros, Hassan set Australian records
With Kipchoge finishing ninth, the men's event was taken out by Hailemaryam Kiros, who set a record for the fastest marathon ran on Australian soil, while on the women's side, Sifan Hassan continued her impressive form with yet another win, breaking the women's record en route to the victory.
"It’s the first major marathon in Australia, in Sydney, and I’m the first one to win, so it’s big history for me," Hassan said.
"I felt so good in the first 5Ks and I think I pushed too hard. I pushed really hard the last 10Ks.
"I was like, 'That’s not really smart. I’m going to pay the price', but I feel I got away with it. I’m so grateful."
