South Sydney Rabbitohs star Brandon Smith has declared his innocence in response to charges laid by Queensland police, alleging he supplied dangerous drugs and used or disclosed inside information for betting.
The former Melbourne Storm premiership-winner has informed the Rabbitohs of his intention to contest the charges, with veteran journalist Phil Rothfield reporting on NRL 360 that Smith is determined to fight the case.
“We do know that Brandon has told Souths he will plead not guilty to this,” Rothfield said.
The charges follow an interview with Queensland police when Smith arrived at Coolangatta Airport ahead of the Rabbitohs’ Round 23 clash against the Gold Coast Titans.

Initially released without charge, Smith was formally charged on August 20 following further investigations by Taskforce Maxima, a branch of the Organised Crime Gangs Group.
According to Code Sports, the Rabbitohs have stated there was “no way” they would stand Smith down ahead of their upcoming clash with rivals the Sydney Roosters, noting that the charges do not meet the NRL’s automatic no-fault stand-down criteria.
Veteran journalist Brent Read reinforced those reports, citing a discussion he had with Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly on NRL 360.
“I exchanged texts with Blake Solly and my understanding is they will not stand him down,” Read said.
“As it stands right now he will play in Round 27 against the Roosters and as you said Buzz he is going to fight these charges.”
The Rabbitohs released a statement shortly following the announcement of the charges:
“The South Sydney Rabbitohs are aware of allegations made by Queensland Police against player Brandon Smith,” the club statement read.
“The club has informed the NRL Integrity Unit about the allegations.
“As this matter is part of a Queensland Police investigation, the Rabbitohs will be making no further comment at this stage.”
