The New Zealand Warriors are pushing to lock in star halfback Luke Metcalf’s long-term future ahead of the November 1 deadline, when the 26-year-old will be free to speak with rival NRL clubs.
Since moving from the Cronulla Sharks, Metcalf has flourished in New Zealand, establishing himself as one of this season’s standout playmakers before suffering an ACL injury against the Brisbane Broncos in round 17.
Over the past three seasons, the young halfback has progressed from a back-up role to become one of the Warriors’ key players, with this year marking his first season starting in the halves, stepping into the shoes of former halfback Shaun Johnson.
Contract talks between Metcalf and the Warriors first began in June but were put on hold while he underwent surgery and focused on his rehabilitation.

According to News Corp, discussions have resumed in recent weeks, with the club presenting a revised offer aimed at keeping the halfback in New Zealand, while fending off interest from rival clubs.
With Metcalf’s contract expiring at the end of the season, securing him before the November 1 negotiation period will ensure he’s locked in well ahead of the Perth Bears beginning their own contract talks.
Despite suffering his second right-knee injury, which stalled his contract negotiations this year, Metcalf is expected to fully recover and be ready for the start of the 2026 season.
With the market for halves limited and other clubs actively searching for a new five-eighth or halfback, Metcalf could gain a significant pay rise and secure a long-term deal that keeps him with the Warriors for multiple years.
