The London Broncos have secured Jason Demetriou as their new head coach on a three-year deal, as the club positions itself for a possible Super League return in 2026.
The move to the Super League marks the 48-year-old’s return to England, where he previously enjoyed great success as a player with Wakefield Trinity for seven seasons, captaining the side for five of them.
Back in the head coach’s role after three seasons with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Demetriou described the opportunity to shape the Wimbledon-based club’s future as one he couldn’t refuse.
“London has incredible potential as a rugby league city,” Demetriou said in a club statement.
“The Club's ambition and the opportunity to help shape its future at this important stage made this an exciting challenge. I can't wait to get started.”
The Broncos’ last taste of Super League action came in 2024, but their stay was short-lived, ending in relegation after just one season—their first absence from the top flight since 2019.
Despite a disappointing 10th-place finish in this year’s Championship, the club is widely tipped to return when the league expands to 14 teams in 2026, giving fans hope of a fresh start at the top level.
With the Salford Red Devils opting out of the new-look competition, three Grade B clubs will be eligible to join the 11 Grade A outfits.
Hull FC and Huddersfield Giants have already applied, alongside Championship sides including the Bradford Bulls, Doncaster, Oldham, Toulouse Olympique, Widnes Vikings, York Knights, and the Broncos themselves.
Demetriou’s move to the Super League comes after he had been widely expected to take the reins as the inaugural coach of the new Papua New Guinea NRL team in 2028, following a strong run with the representative side, which he guided to two wins and one loss.
