The Panthers seemingly broke the internet this week, when it was revealed that Ivan Cleary and the team intended to rest 16 players for their Round 26 clash against the Bulldogs.
With a top-four finish out of reach for the reigning premiers, the team have instead opted to give the majority of their top-flight side, essentially punting on what was billed as a heavyweight clash.
The decision has understandably drawn plenty of ire from across the football world, but the Panthers' rest could also potentially jeopardise an impending $3 billion deal.
Why Panthers controversial Round 26 rest could jeopardise $3 billion deal
The Penrith Panthers could be setting a dangerous precedent, according to a top Australian media expert, as they plan to rest 16 players in Round 26.
If more teams follow their lead and sit their stars at the end of the regular season, it could severely impact the upcoming 2028 TV rights deal, which is projected to reach $3 billion.
"The resting of players will probably be used as a negotiation technique (by prospective rights holders)," Pearman Media's Steve Allen told Yahoo Sport Australia.
"Although there is the likelihood of a significant drop in audience ratings for the next two weekends – around minus 10 per cent-plus - having a bye weekend might be a solid debate but it's (definite) lost ratings and potential lost revenue."
Foxtel boss Paul Delaney has already criticised the move from the team seeking their fifth-straight premiership, saying that he believes they are letting down the fans.
"I can understand Penrith’s management has the finals in mind," Delany said, "but of all Australian sports, I thought the NRL and the teams of the NRL had a real sense of looking after the fans."
"The fans have been looking forward to this game and were looking forward to another blockbuster.
"That’s what people going to the game want and people watching the game want."
Currently seventh on the NRL ladder, the highest Penrith can finish in the regular season is fifth, leading the team to instead regroup and look towards the finals.
