Australia's Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt has been hit with a two-week suspension and fined AU$30,000 over an incident following the team's defeat to Italy in Malaga, Spain last November.

Hewitt, who claimed to be acting in self-defence, was found to have pushed a 60-year-old volunteer anti-doping official.

Following an in-person hearing and two online sessions during June and July of this year, the charge against the former world number one was upheld.

In a boost for Australia's upcoming Davis Cup campaign, the period of the ban has been suspended until September 24, meaning the 44-year-old can be involved in this weekend's clash with Belgium in Sydney.

Karen Moorhouse, CEO of International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), the body who brought the charge, said Hewitt had crossed a line with his behaviour.

"Anti-doping personnel play a fundamental role behind the scenes in upholding the integrity of tennis, and they should be able to go about their roles without fear of physical contact," Moorhouse said in a statement.

"In this case, that line was clearly crossed, and we had no other option but to take action."

The incident took place in a crowded tunnel as the players and officials made their way off the court after Italy's victory in the Davis Cup semi final.

An independent tribunal was called in to make a ruling, with the ITIA pushing for a $37,000 fine and a four-week suspension.

Upon the final decision, the tribunal recommended that $10,000 of the fine be paid to the volunteer anti-doping chaperone "in compensation for the stress, discomfort and embarrassment of the incident and these proceedings."
