The first Grand Tour of the 2025 cycling season is about to get underway, with some of the world's top riders set to tackle the Giro d'Italia.
Cyclists will compete for the iconic maglia rosa – the pink jersey worn by the tour leader – as they cover over 3,400km during a three-week period.
Former winner Jai Hindley headlines the Australian contingent as he returns with Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe.
The in-form Jay Vine will also be in action for UAE Team Emirates XRG, who are without reigning Giro champion Tadej Pogacar.

How to watch the Giro d'Italia in Australia: TV channel, live stream
All 21 stages of the Giro d'Italia can be watched live and free on SBS Viceland and via streaming service SBS On Demand.
Hour-long highlights will also be aired daily on SBS from 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, and 7:00 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. on weekends (AEST).
Coverage for the opening stage will begin at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9. Check your local TV guides for timings throughout the tour.

When does the Giro d'Italia start? Dates, schedule for 2025
The 2025 edition of the Giro begins on Friday, May 9 and will conclude on Sunday, June 1.
Riders will complete 21 stages, with rest days scheduled after Stages 9 and 15.

This year's race will kick off in Albania, then travel through Slovenia before moving to mainland Italy.
The route will see competitors pass through beautiful landscapes, ride up mountains and cut across historic cities.
In particular, the peloton will be tested by the infamous slopes of the Alps, Dolomites and Apennines.
Eight hilly stages, six flat stages, five mountain stages and two individual time trials are scheduled.

Hindley is the Australian most likely to make waves at this year's Giro, with the former winner forming a potent one-two punch with Slovenian star Primoz Roglic at BORA–hansgrohe.
