JUMP TO:

Garrett Crochet vs. Max Fried was destined to be a pitcher's duel. Fried did his job — 6.1 scoreless innings in front of his home crowd — but Crochet was simply on another level Tuesday night, lifting the Boston Red Sox to a strong start to the postseason with his brilliance.

The lefty, who emerged as an ace and AL Cy Young candidate in his first season in Boston, overcame a second-inning home run to lead the Red Sox to a 3-1 victory in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card series against the New York Yankees. In yet another postseason chapter between the famed American League clubs, Alex Cora got the most he could from his top rotation and bullpen arms.

Crochet went 7.2 innings with 11 strikeouts, throwing his fastest pitch of the night (100.2 mph) on his 117th and final throw of the night. Aroldis Chapman, the flamethrowing veteran who had an outstanding age-37 season in Boston, finished the job from there — although Chapman nearly allowed the Yankees to come back with three hits in the ninth inning, he shut the door for a road win.

Boston's bats couldn't get to Fried over six innings. But once Aaron Boone pulled his top starter, the Red Sox broke through. After an Anthony Volpe home run gave New York the early 1-0 lead, the visitors responded with a clutch two-run single from Masataka Yoshida in the seventh, then an insurance RBI double from Alex Bregman.

Coming into Tuesday, the rival Yankees and Red Sox had gone 12-12 all-time against one another in postseason games. Boston broke that tie in a big way, now one win away from eliminating the defending AL champs on the road. The Red Sox won't have the luxury of Crochet on the mound in Wednesday's Game 2, though. Will the Yankees be able to respond after coming up short in Game 1?

The Sporting News tracked live updates and highlights from Red Sox vs. Yankees in Game 1 of the 2025 American League Wild Card Series. Here's how Boston opened the series with a win.

Red Sox vs. Yankees updates, highlights from AL Wild Card Game 1

All times ET.

Final: Red Sox 3, Yankees 1

9:13 p.m. — What an escape job by Aroldis Chapman. After three-straight hits, the flamethrower shuts down the next three Yankees hitters with no runs allowed to seal the Red Sox's Game 1 victory. New York couldn't quite come back after Garrett Crochet's dominance, then Chapman's save job.

Boston takes a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-three series, able to advance to the ALDS with a win tomorrow.

9:11 p.m. —  The Yankees are down to their last out. Chisholm's fly ball to right field was not deep enough for a sac-fly, meaning Grisham is at the dish in the same scenario: down two, with the winning run at first base.

9:08 p.m. — In a matchup of a power pitcher and a pure power hitter, Chapman strikes out Giancarlo Stanton on four pitches. The Red Sox are two outs away from taking Game 1, but the Yankees are still threatening.

9:05 p.m. — Get Game 1 on your screens. The Yankees' first three batters in the ninth, Paul Goldschmidt, Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger, all single on a total of five pitches from Aroldis Chapman. The bases are loaded. There's nobody out. New York is down two runs, with the tying run at second and the winning run at first.

Giancarlo Stanton, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham are due up.

9:00 p.m. — Boston has a two-run lead with Chapman on the mound in the bottom of the ninth. Can he close out Game 1?

Red Sox 3, Yankees 1

8:56 p.m. RBI DOUBLE — Alex Bregman came to Boston as a known playoff performer, the owner of 88 postseason hits and 54 RBIs. He's no longer with the Houston Astros, but he's still as clutch as they come; the infielder send a ball deep into left field to the wall, scoring Trevor Story in the top of the ninth.

Chapman gets some insurance for the bottom half of the inning, as the Red Sox are threatening to silence Yankee Stadium to open the Wild Card series.

End of eighth inning: Red Sox 2, Yankees 1

8:50 p.m. — Chapman got Caballero to fly out to right to end the Yankees' half of the eighth. The left-handed reliever isn't done yet, as he'll return in the ninth for a save opportunity, but Boston can pad its lead first.

A note on Crochet: Impressively, his fastest pitch of the night was his last. It was a 100.2 mph heater for his 11th strikeout, with Boston now on the verge of taking Game 1.

8:37 p.m. — What a night it was for Garrett Crochet. He surrendered the game's first run in the second inning, but otherwise cruised through the Yankees' lineup, not walking a single batter while allowing four hits and striking out 11. He's pulled by Cora with 117 pitches, as the Red Sox pushed their ace to his limit in hopes of taking Game 1.

Boston is now going to another one of the best pitchers in baseball this season: Aroldis Chapman. The flamethrower will look for a four-out save after owning a 1.17 ERA and 85 strikeouts over 67 games this season.

8:30 p.m. — Garrett Crochet is back on the mound in the bottom of the eighth, seeking to continue painting his masterpiece tonight. He strikes out Trent Grisham to start the frame, but allows a hit to Anthony Volpe. The ace's leash is growing shorter, now over 110 pitches.

8:28 p.m. — Devin Williams allowed a leadoff walk, but then sends the Red Sox down in order to keep Boston quiet in the top of the eighth. Can the Yankees respond as their opportunities dwindle?

End of seventh inning: Red Sox 2, Yankees 1

8:21 p.m. — If the Red Sox hold on, history will say Crochet won the pitcher's duel. He makes quick work of the Yankees in the bottom of the seventh, getting a pop-up and two groundouts. However, he's now at an even 100 pitches. Boston will likely have to go to its bullpen soon, even if Crochet can get them another out or two in the eighth.

Crochet has retired 16-straight, nearly flawless since the home run.

8:13 p.m. — Cruz got a scare from another pinch-hitter, Nathaniel Lowe, who sent a ball deep into right field. But Judge reeled the ball in, ending a top of the seventh that saw New York lose its lead. The Red Sox couldn't build off the two-run hit despite a walk from Alex Bregman.

Now, Garrett Crochet will remain in the game, sitting at 94 pitches.

Red Sox 2, Yankees 1

8:04 p.m.  TWO-RUN SINGLE — Just like that, the Red Sox have the advantage. They pounce on Weaver as soon as Fried exits, with a walk and an Eric Sogard sliding double leading to a base hit into center from pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida.

Boston's bats struggled to string together hits against Fried, but they still take the lead in the seventh inning of Game 1. Fernando Cruz comes in for Weaver.

7:53 p.m. — Aaron Boone let Fried back out to start the seventh, but with a short leash. He exits after getting a groundout to start the inning, with Yankee Stadium providing a standing ovation for its ace who went 6.1 scoreless innings with six strikeouts, protecting a one-run lead.

Luke Weaver enters with the Yankees needing eight outs to seal Game 1.

End of sixth inning: Yankees 1, Red Sox 0

7:49 p.m. — The bottom of the sixth brought more danger for Garrett Crochet, with two long fly balls from Caballero and Goldschmidt, but they were both tracked down. The lefty then gets Aaron Judge swinging, but he's at 94 pitches. Will Alex Cora let him back out for the seventh, or will he finish with nine strikeouts over six one-run innings?

7:42 p.m. — Max Fried refuses to blink. He walked his third batter of the night in the sixth, but then bounces right back with a cutter to get Nate Eaton to ground into a double-play.

The Yankees could use some insurance, but they also won't need any if their pitchers continue silencing Red Sox hitters.

End of fifth inning: Yankees 1, Red Sox 0

7:31 p.m. — It's now fair to call Game 1 a pitcher's duel. The two aces are going back-and-forth, as Crochet now strikes out the side in the bottom of the fifth, sending Grisham, Volpe and Weels back to the dugout. He's got eight punchouts, but 81 pitches through five.

7:23 p.m. — Max Fried found a little trouble in the fifth, with Refsnyder walking and Story reaching on an infield hit, but the left-hander still gets out of the inning with no runs allowed. He's at 79 pitches though, and we're inching closer to Aaron Boone going to his bullpen.

End of fourth inning: Yankees 1, Red Sox 0

7:12 p.m. — This game is starting to live up to the "pitcher's duel" expectation, with Garrett Crochet now through four one-run innings with five strikeouts. Both teams have three hits, but Volpe's homer remains the difference.

7:05 p.m. — Yankee Stadium erupts as Fried gets Jarren Duran swinging to end the two-out rally. He's through four scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

7:01 p.m. — The Red Sox bats are alive, as they're threatening in the top of the fourth. A two-out walk from Narvaez is followed by a double down the right-field line for Nate Eaton, and there are suddenly two runners in scoring position after Fried was cruising.

End of third inning: Yankees 1, Red Sox 0

6:52 p.m. — Crochet has settled back in since the solo home run. He punches out Jose Caballero and Paul Goldschmidt, then gets Aaron Judge to fly out to left in the bottom of the third. Crochet has four strikeouts in three innings.

6:42 p.m. — Boston got another hit against Fried, a single from Nick Sogard in the nine-spot, but they can't take advantage. Fried strikes out Trevor Story to end the top of the third on an 0-2 curveball.

End of second inning: Yankees 1, Red Sox 0

6:36 p.m. — Grisham and Rosario were retired by Garrett Crochet after the homer. He gets out of the inning with one run allowed, but New York has the first advantage in this best-of-three series.

Yankees 1, Red Sox 0

6:33 p.m. HOME RUN — The defending AL champs strike first. Anthony Volpe blasts one over the right-field porch, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead in Game 1.

6:28 p.m. — Boston goes down 1-2-3 in the top of the second, with Fried striking out Carlos Narvaez. The lefty is off to a nice start in the postseason.

End of first inning: Red Sox 0, Yankees 0

6:21 p.m. — The Yankees threatened against Garrett Crochet to begin this matchup, but he escapes. Following consecutive singles for Goldschmidt and Judge, Crochet bounces back by striking out Cody Bellinger, then getting Giancarlo Stanton to ground into a double-play.

We're scoreless after one frame.

6:13 p.m. — Fried got Trevor Story to strike out, while Bregman poked a single into right field. However, a groundout ends the top of the first with Bregman stranded.

6:08 p.m. — Out comes Rob Refsnyder, and this game is under way. He grounds out to begin Game 1. Both Refsnyder and Romy Gonzalez have an OPS over .900 vs. lefties this season; can it lead to success against Max Fried?
