Landen Roupp injury update: Giants pitcher carted off after taking liner off leg vs. Padres image

The Giants have quietly assembled one of the better rotations in baseball, pitching to a 3.71 team ERA in 2025, the fifth-best mark in MLB.

After a freak injury on Wednesday night, however, they might be left without one of the foremost architects of that success during the stretch run.

Landen Roupp, the second-year right-hander who's quietly emerged as one of MLB's best back-of-rotation starters in 2025, was felled by what looked to be a serious knee injury on Wednesday night vs. the Padres. Here’s what you need to know.

Landen Roupp injury update

Roupp was locked into a duel with San Diego centerfielder Ramon Laureano when the apparent injury occurred. Laureano fired a line drive toward Roupp, striking him in the right thigh. While attempting to retrieve the ball, Roupp dug his left foot into the dirt. When he attempted to change directions, his left knee appeared to hyperextend.

Roupp writhed in pain as the ball trickled toward home plate. He grabbed at his left knee as medical personnel streamed onto the diamond. After a brief examination, Roupp was escorted off the field via cart. He gazed at the San Diego concourses as he disappeared into the tunnel.

Roupp, 26, has enjoyed a standout second season of big-league ball. Drafted in the 12th round of the 2021 Draft, Roupp emerged as San Francisco's fifth starter in 2025. Across 104.1 innings, Roupp is 7-6 with a 3.45 ERA. His 100 strikeouts rank third on the Giants, only bested by Logan Webb (175) and Robbie Ray (158).

The Giants are 61-65 on the season. They sit 10.5 games back of the division-leading Dodgers and six games back of the Mets for the final NL wild-card spot.

Landen Roupp stats

Drafted as a starter, Roupp spent much of his maiden season working from the bullpen. He returned to the rotation in 2025 and has looked pretty good doing so thus far, slotting in nicely into the Webb- and Ray-led unit.
