The Cleveland Cavaliers made a handful of depth signings heading into training camp.
One of them, Norchad Omier, is seeking to make history.
Omier, whose signing was reported by Cleveland.com's Chris Fedor, is from Nicaragua. There has never been an NBA player from that country to appear in a regular season game.
Omier was born in Bluefields, Nicaragua.
He moved as a teenager to Miami, Florida, where he played at Miami Prep and averaged 26.7 points and 20.3 rebounds per game.
Now 6-foot-7, 248 pounds, Omier began his college career at Arkansas State.
He spent two seasons with the Red Wolves, leading the Sun Belt in field goal percentage and rebounding in both campaigns. As a sophomore, he averaged 17.9 points, 12.2 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and 1.6 steals per game on 63.2% shooting.
From there, he went to Miami for two seasons. In 2023-24, he put up 17 points and 10 rebounds per game.
Omier transferred to Baylor for his final college season and averaged 15.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game on 55.6% shooting.
The contract Omier has with the Cavs is likely an Exhibit 10 deal, which usually results in a start to the season in the G League. But being in the organization at all gives Omier a chance to earn a call up and make history.
