Alabama looks to survive early without its leader in the backfield, but when will Jam Miller be back?

For Alabama football fans, Jam Miller’s injury was the gut punch no one wanted at the end of fall camp. The senior running back, who had transformed his frame and was set to lead the Crimson Tide ground attack, suffered a dislocated collarbone during the Tide’s scrimmage last Saturday. His absence changes the outlook for the offense, at least in the short term. But when can Alabama expect its top rusher back on the field?

The Timeline for Miller’s Return

Head coach Kalen DeBoer gave fans a reason to breathe easier. While Miller is out for the season opener against Florida State on Aug. 30 and is doubtful against ULM and Wisconsin, DeBoer said he expects him back for the SEC opener at Georgia on Sept. 27.

“Having that bye week, I feel good that he will be back out there,” DeBoer told ESPN. “He does so many things for us at that position.”

Why Alabama Needs Him Back Quickly

Miller is more than a ball carrier. He’s a proven workhorse and the most trusted protector in pass situations. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said, “He was a clear No. 1 for us with everything he did, from protection to getting the tough yards.”

Last season, Miller led the team with 668 rushing yards. His offseason dedication showed, as he added muscle, looked faster, and was having his best camp yet. Without him, the Tide lose a quiet leader who sets the tone in the locker room and on the field.

Who Steps Up in His Absence?

The door is wide open in Alabama’s backfield. Daniel Hill and Richard Young bring experience, while Dre Washington offers a change of pace. The wild card is redshirt freshman Kevin Riley, who Grubb said has been “creeping up” with his physicality and speed. But this will be a committee approach until Miller returns.

“It’s going to be a little bit by committee until Jam gets back,” Grubb said. “I’m excited to see who’s going to come out here these next few days and take over.”

Miller’s return date is circled for Sept. 27 in Athens against Georgia. Until then, Alabama will need to find answers in the run game. The Tide can shift toward the pass with Ty Simpson at quarterback, but their offense won’t be whole until Miller is back. Fans know the difference he makes, and they’ll be counting the days until their leader takes the field again.
