Arch Manning was facing his first SEC test of the 2025 season, going into The Swamp to face the Florida Gators, but his performance was not enough for the No. 9 Longhorns, who were upset by the Gators, 29-14.
Manning finished the day completing 16 of 29 passes for 263 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. It took the Texas offense most of the first half to get into the game, punting on five of its first six drives; the lone score of the first half came after a turnover set up the Longhorns in Florida territory, which ended in a 6-yard Manning touchdown pass to Tre Wisner. In the second half, he showed flashes of his potential, connecting with Ryan Wingo for a 38-yard touchdown over the middle of the field after stepping up in the pocket to deliver a crucial deep shot.
Manning’s second-half rally was ultimately stifled, and the loss dropped Texas to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in the SEC, taking a massive hit to its playoff hopes. The Longhorns have now lost to two Power Four opponents, including No. 3 Ohio State to open the season, and Florida on Saturday afternoon. The national championship expectations that the preseason No. 1 team entered the year with have drastically changed.

How did Arch Manning do today?
Manning struggled to start the game, with Texas having to punt on five out of its six opening drives. The quarterback connected with his star running back Tre Wisner for a six-yard touchdown in the second quarter to cut the Texas deficit to 10-7, but that was off a turnover that set up the offense in Florida territory.
After that, Manning and the Texas offense struggled and it took them until midway through the third quarter for the quarterback to connect with Ryan Wingo for a 38-yard touchdown, his second of the day. Texas cut the lead to 22-14 at that point, but a Dallas Wilson 55-yard touchdown made it 29-14 Gators almost immediately. Manning did lead Texas on a four-play, 45 yard drive to make the score 29-21, but was unable to lead a game-tying drive with 55 seconds remaining with no timeouts.
Manning was forced to throw the ball in tough situations all day, especially with the Longhorns trailing by double digits. Both of his interceptions came in the fourth quarter after penalties by the Texas offensive line moved them back; Texas had eight offensive penalties for 50 yards, and Manning threw his picks on 2nd & 19 and 1st & 20.
Though Manning was inconsistent, the Texas offensive line — which has four new starters this season — did not do him any favors. Manning was sacked six times by the Florida defense and was pressured plenty more, with defenders constantly in his face. Texas won the Joe Moore award for the best offensive line in America in 2024, but in the Longhorns' two big tests this year, the line has been outplayed.
While he heated up in the second half, it was not enough for Texas, and there were critical mistakes by Steve Sarkisian's offense that drove Manning and co. back. Texas' national championship hopes have taken a massive hit, with the No. 9 Longhorns dropping to 3-2.
