Miami vs. Notre Dame key notes: H2H, history and more ahead of Week 1 matchup image

While Saturday had its games, another big blockbuster awaits us on Sunday when the No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish square off with the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes to kick off their 2025 college football season. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, with televised coverage on ABC from Hard Rock Stadium.

Notre Dame had a strong finish last season as they went all the way to the national championship game against all odds. In the process, they defeated big programs like the Georgia Bulldogs and the Penn State Nittany Lions before being crushed by the Ohio State Buckeyes in the NCAA championship game.

Meanwhile, Miami was powered by quarterback Cam Ward, and they finished with an overall 10-3 record while going 6-2 in the ACC. While they couldn't qualify for the College Football Playoff, they were in the mix for the ACC title race deep into November.

Miami vs. Notre Dame: H2H and history

The Fighting Irish hold the series lead against Miami with an 18-8-1 record in total meetings. The rivalry started in 1955, and Notre Dame was all over Miami in the early matchup with them at one point having a lead of 12-1-1 in the series.

The balance shifted in the 1980s when the Hurricanes rose to prominence. From 1983 to 1987, the Hurricanes won four out of five matchups. This includes a devastating 58-7 rout in 1985. Miami had another big game against Notre Dame, winning the 1987 matchup by 24-0.

Miami vs. Notre Dame: Most memorable clash

Both programs had their most thrilling game in 1988. The matchup was branded "Catholics vs. Convicts." The game lived up to its expectations as Notre Dame came out on top to win the game 31-30. In the dying moments of that game, Miami failed to complete a two-point conversion.

After Notre Dame’s 1990 victory ended Miami's national championship hopes, the teams ended their regular rivalry schedule. They encountered each other infrequently. During this dormancy period in this rivalry, the few important games played between the two were in the 2010 Sun Bowl, where Notre Dame won 33-17, and again in 2012 (a win later vacated) and 2017, when Miami throttled ND 41-8.
