The 25-year-old was heading into the final season of his rookie deal and would have been a restricted free agent in 2026. Instead, Chicago moved quickly to secure his role as the primary backup behind Caleb Williams.

Bagent has been with the Bears since 2023, rising from an undrafted Division II quarterback at Shepherd University to a reliable option when called upon. He started four games as a rookie after Justin Fields went down with an injury, posting a 2-2 record.

His latest preseason showing against Buffalo likely solidified the team’s confidence. Bagent completed 13 of 22 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown in Chicago’s 38-0 win.

Despite the offseason addition of veteran Case Keenum, Bagent has remained ahead on the depth chart. Head coach Ben Johnson praised his preparation and focus, saying the young quarterback brings intensity and intelligence to every meeting and practice session.

General manager Ryan Poles also backed the decision, calling Bagent one of the hardest workers in the organization.
