The Denver Broncos made the playoffs last season for the first time since 2015, so most expected the team to improve upon that this season, particularly given the offseason additions that were made. Anything less than a return to the playoffs would be a major disappointment, but the Broncos were becoming a trendy Super Bowl pick as the season drew near.
Now that the season is here and the team has played two games, some people are already jumping off the bandwagon. The Broncos earned a sloppy victory in Week 1 over the Tennessee Titans before giving up nearly 500 yards of offense to the Indianapolis Colts in a heartbreaking 1-point loss this past Sunday.
Using current odds set by DraftKings, Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report took a look at the chances of each team making the playoffs and decided whether to buy or sell those odds. The Broncos are -140 to make them, still favored to get in, but Gagnon chose to sell that idea.
"Selling: That loss to the Colts hurt, especially considering they have the Chargers and Eagles on the road in the next three weeks. I like this team but fear they may dig too large a hole in the first half of the year, and -140 is far from tempting under those circumstances", wrote Gagnon.
Gagnon is right to cite the team's upcoming schedule as a deterrent as the Broncos don't have an "easy" win until perhaps Week 6 when they travel to London to face the New York Jets. Even that won't be a sure bet, however. What he means by "far from tempting under those circumstances" is that you wouldn't make a lot of money on a bet that the Broncos make the playoffs, even if they do, so it would be best to just stay away from it.
It's a good sign that Vegas still sees the Broncos as a playoff team, but there is no doubt their shaky start to the season has influenced those odds negatively. The team could completely turn things around with a win over the Chargers this Sunday, however.
