Jets' Justin Fields injury update brings QB depth chart, backup role into spotlight image

The New York Jets were so close to an impressive win in Week 1, but even then, it felt like a lot of positive signs came out of their 34-32 loss to the Steelers.

Not so much in Week 2, when the Buffalo Bills absolutely walloped the Jets.

And the news got worse late in the game, when quarterback Justin Fields went down with a head injury.

On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Fields is in concussion protocol.

The Jets are 0-2, and their QB is hurt.

Aside from one big run, Fields hadn't played well on Sunday, but neither had any of his teammates.

Without Fields, the Jets are that much more limited in what they can do in an offense that really only has one receiving threat (Garrett Wilson).

New York's only saving grace is that backup QB Tyrod Taylor is an experienced NFL quarterback who even once made a Pro Bowl with the Bills. He's still mobile, although not to the extent Fields is, and he can deliver the football on time and on target.

The Jets also have quarterback Brady Cook, an undrafted rookie out of Missouri, on their practice squad.

Fields' status for Week 3 won't be determined until later in the week, but being in concussion protocol doesn't do any favors for preparation, either.

The Jets play at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 1 p.m. on Sunday, with the Bucs coming off a slightly shorter week after playing Monday night in Week 2.

A turnaround will have to start soon for the Jets, whether they've got their QB1 or not.
