Steelers vs. Vikings results: Pittsburgh's defense propels team to Dublin win over Vikings image

DUBLIN — The Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings played in the NFL's lone Ireland game of the 2025 season. The game meant a lot to the Steelers organization in particular, as team owner Art Rooney II's family has deep ties to Ireland.

Pittsburgh came into this game off a win over the New England Patriots. Through three weeks, though, the offense had been the story of the team as the defense, the typical identity of the Steelers, had struggled. Pittsburgh's defense finally came alive against the Patriots, but the big question was whether it could be sustained, and the answer was yes. Despite allowing some late points, the defense registered another six sacks and added two interceptions.

Minnesota looked like they were the team to beat in the NFC in its Week 3 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Backup quarterback Carson Wentz was rushed all game because of Pittsburgh's defensive attack, and they couldn't get anything going until late. The defense struggled, but still managed a blocked field goal, and still had a presence.

Vikings wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison each had over 100 yards receiving, as did Steelers wide out DK Metcalf. Pittsburgh starting running back Jaylen Warren was ruled out before the game, and backup running back Kenneth Gainwell filled in well with 99 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while adding 35 yards on six receptions through the air.

The Sporting News was at the game live. Here are the scores and highlights from the Dublin game between the Steelers and Vikings.

All times ET.

FINAL SCORE: Steelers 24, Vikings 21

12:50 p.m. -- Minnesota played its ugliest drive of the game on its final one. The Vikings nearly had a ball intercepted, then benefitted from back-to-back defensive penalties. After Carson Wentz was hit with intentional grounding, his last pass of the game got batted down.

12:38 p.m. -- After the failed onside kick attempt, the Steelers need a first down to clinch this one. Gainwell picked up four on first down to get to the two-minute warning. They weren't able to convert the third down and short look, though.

Pittsburgh took a delay of game to set up the punt. Minnesota will have a chance to drive to tie, or win the game.

TOUCHDOWN -- Steelers 24, Vikings 21

12:28 p.m. -- Minnesota started on the 1-yard line. The Vikings managed to drive the length of the field thanks largely to an 81-yard reception by Addison. Minnesota was facing fourth down, and Wentz found Nailor for the score.

12:20 p.m. -- Pittsburgh drove down the field, running all over the defense. It got down to fourth and goal from the three-yard line. The Steelers called a timeout and initially sent their field goal unit on.

Aaron Rodgers waved them off. They should have stayed out there because Kenneth Gainwell got two yards and ended at the one-yard line.

TOUCHDOWN -- Steelers 24, Vikings 14

12:05 p.m. -- Unfortunately for the Steelers, the defense wasn't able to get the stop that they wanted and wasn't able to channel Renegade into a stop. Carson Wentz found Zavier Scott for the score and hit Jalen Nailor for the two-point conversion.

12:02 p.m. -- When they are at home, the Steelers will play Renegade by Styx at a pivotal moment in the game. After kicking the field goal, it played at Croke Park and the crowd erupted.

FIELD GOAL -- Steelers 24, Vikings 6

11:55 a.m. -- It was announced that there are just over 74,000 fans here. Pittsburgh's offense is content running the ball, and the clock, and the Minnesota defense hasn't been able to slow them down. Chris Boswell nailed a field goal to increase the Steelers' lead.

3rd quarter

11:41 a.m. -- The Steelers' defensive line continues to terrorize Carson Wentz. After an incomplete pass, and a run that went nowhere, they sacked Wentz for the sixth time.

TOUCHDOWN -- Steelers 21, Vikings 6

11:35 a.m. -- Pittsburgh took over at Minnesota's 35-yard line. The Steelers relied on Kenneth Gainwell to get them down the field, taking three consecutive carries down to the four-yard line. Fittingly, he capped off the drive with his second score of the day.

11:31 a.m. -- Minnesota avoided another three-and-out as Wentz hit Adam Thielen for a five-yard gain, which was good enough for a first down. The quarterback picked up nine on the ground later in the drive to pick up a much-needed first down.

Wentz dodged a would-be tackler, but got hit from the other side and fumbled the ball; the Vikings recovered it. He got sacked for the second consecutive play to set up third and 16.

Wentz had a pass batted down and intercepted at the line. TJ Watt returned it, and then, after he was tackled, ran over to the stands and punted the ball into the crowd.

11:17 a.m. -- Pittsburgh wasn't able to take advantage and had a three-and-out of their own.

11:13 a.m. -- It was a quick three-and-out for the Vikings coming out of the half. Wentz was sacked on third down, and the Steelers declined a holding call.

END OF HALF- Steelers 14, Vikings 6

2nd Quarter

10:53 a.m. -- The Steelers took over with six seconds left in the half. Rodgers decided to kneel it out.

FIELD GOAL -- Steelers 14, Vikings 6

10:50 a.m. -- The Vikings took over deep in their territory. Minnesota got helped out by Pittsburgh rookie defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, who got flagged for roughing the passer on first down.

Wentz was able to hit Jefferson to get the ball across midfield. He scrambled on the next play and hit Jefferson downfield; he slipped with nobody near him. Minnesota took its final timeout. On second down, Wentz threw it behind T.J. Hockenson to bring up third down. He floated one to the endzone, and it was nearly picked but the defender was ruled out of bounds.

The Vikings lined up for the field goal, but the Steelers were called for the five-yard penalty. That moved them closer, and Minnesota still hit the 28-yard field goal.

10:40 a.m. -- On their next drive, the Steelers faced third and one near the 50-yard line. They went with a halfback dive to Kenneth Gainwell, and it looked like he got it on a gain of two, but then he was shoved after the play and the Vikings got called for unnecessary roughness, so the Steelers got an extra 15 out of the play.

Pittsburgh quarterback Aaron Rodgers was pressured, so he took off down the field. He was tackled from behind and fumbled it, but it was instantly scooped by Broderick Jones, who secured possession and the first down for Pittsburgh. That took us to the two-minute warning.

On second down out of the break, Rodgers was thrown to the ground and lost 11 yards on a sack. On third down, Rodgers hit Gainwell over the middle, and he took it to the right, but wasn't able to get a first down.

Steelers attempted a 30-yard field goal, but it was blocked.

10:25 a.m. -- The Vikings couldn't get anything going on the first two plays of their next drive, only picking up five yards, but Minnesota was able to keep their drive alive.

After a virutal measurement, the Vikings were later facing fourth down and inches on their drive. They didn't go for a tush push, but a fullback handoff to Mason who easily picked it up the first down on a gain of nine.

Wentz was pressured and was picked off by the Steelers defense. It looked like the ball had been tipped, because the ball came out wobbly, but nonetheless it is a turnover.

TOUCHDOWN -- Steelers 14, Vikings 3

10:13 a.m. -- Rodgers hits Metcalf over the middle and the wide receiver took it EIGHTY yards for the score. It looked like Calvin Austin III didn't get enough on a block toward the end of the play, but Metcalf pushed his way into the endzone for the score.

The press box announcer said that that play gave Rodgers the record for most 50-yard completions in NFL history.

10:08 a.m. -- Wentz didn't find his returning teammate but Jordan Addison brings in his first reception of the game in the second. He missed the team's first three games due to a suspension from the NFL.

Nate Herbig brings Carson Wentz down with a sack on third down and the Vikings will be forced to punt.

1st Quarter

TOUCHDOWN -- Steelers 7, Vikings 3

9:57 a.m. -- Pittsburgh's second drive starts with a handoff to Kenneth Gainwell for a gain of nine. Rodgers was able to hit DK Metcalf for a 10-yard gain to move the chains. He found Metcalf for another big 10-yard gain for a first down. Rodgers rewarded his wide receiver with another pass, which Metcalf pushed for a 10-yard gain

Pittsburgh's first trip in the redzone ended with a one-yard score from Gainwell which sent the crowd into a frenzy.

FIELD GOAL -- Vikings 3, Steelers 0

9:47 a.m. -- Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz wastes no time in hitting Justin Jefferson for a short gain, and Jordan Mason picks up seven yards for a first down.

With TJ Watt on his heels, Wentz hit Mason on a swing pass for a gain of seven yards. It looked like the Steelers defense couldn't do anything to stop the Minnesota momentum, but then Mason fumbled the ball and Jalen Ramsey returned it for a touchdown.

After review, though, it was determined that Mason was out of bounds when he fumbled, so possession stays with Minnesota.

On third and nine from the Steelers' 15-yard line, linebacker Patrick Queen blitzed off the edge and was untouched as he obliterated Wentz in the backfield. The Vikings were able to hit the 41-yard field goal for the early lead.

9:36 a.m. -- Bad news for Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers as he gets sacked for a loss of eight on the play. They go play action on second down, with Rodgers hitting Kenneth Gainwell for a gain of six. On the long third down, Rodgers is blitzed and has to hurriedly hit Jonnu Smith for a loss of one.

A bad first opening drive as the Steelers offense had a net loss of two yards.

Pre Game

9:27 a.m. -- The Vikings have won the toss and deferred. The Steelers will get the ball first. Here at Croke Park it definitely feels like a home game for Pittsburgh.

8:55 a.m. -- NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported ahead of the game that Steelers backup quarterback Skylar Thompson was jumped and robbed on Friday night in Dublin. He sustained minor injuries, but is okay.

8:30 a.m. -- We are about an hour from kickoff here at Croke Park.

8:15 a.m. -- The Vikings had already announced that J.J. McCarthy wouldn't play in this game. Here are their other inactives, with Desmond Ridder likely serving as the team's emergency QB.

8:12 a.m. -- Fans are filing into the stadium, with the crowd heavily favoring the Steelers. They will miss their team's starting running back as Jaylen Warren warmed up pre-game, but will not be playing in the game.
