With roster cutdown day approaching on Tuesday, Aug. 26, one analyst believes a cut candidate of the Pittsburgh Steelers could land with the Green Bay Packers or Miami Dolphins in a trade before he gets the boot.
Pittsburgh cornerback Beanie Bishop has been pegged as a cut candidate by Steelers Wire's Andrew Vasquez.
A former undrafted free agent signing in 2024, Bishop had an up-and-down rookie season and now his roster spot is in jeopardy in 2025 because of all the moves the Steelers made at cornerback this offseason.
Vasquez goes on to list the Packers and Dolphins as two possible trade partners for Bishop. Here's what he said about Bishop and his trade value:
Despite a strong rookie season in 2024, the fan-favorite Bishop appears to be on the outside looking in just days away from the final roster cuts. Rumors began to swirl after DC Teryl Austin declared the preseason finale would be an important game for Bishop, but he didn't play a snap — leading many to believe his Steelers days were numbered until he was confirmed injured. HC Mike Tomlin didn't specify what the injury was but confirmed he was only considered "day-to-day." If he overcomes this mystery injury over the next few days, a trade wouldn't be the most surprising move in the world.
Possible trade value: fifth- to sixth-round draft pick
Possible landing spots: Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins
Bishop's coverage numbers were solid last season, with the West Virginia product giving up a completion rate of 57.1% and a passer rating of 59.5. However, Bishop did struggle with consistency, which led to Pittsburgh turning to Cam Sutton, who ended up being worse.
Now, according to Pittsburgh's unofficial depth chart, Jalen Ramsey is slated to start in the slot, with Bishop backing him up.
The Packers acquired Nate Hobbs in free agency to man the slot in 2025, but a recent knee surgery leaves his status for the start of the season up in the air, so Green Bay could be looking for more help at the position.
The Dolphins have seen a lot of turnover in their cornerbacks room this year, but Miami does already have a few candidates to play in the slot, including Jason Marshall Jr., who has been impressive this offseason, and Mike Hilton.
As a result, Miami's need at the position isn't as dire, thus they appear less likely than the Packers to have interest in Bishop.
The Steelers possibly getting a fifth-round pick for Bishop as Vasquez suggests is a bit lofty of a projection. Instead, we'd envision Pittsburgh getting no more than a sixth-rounder in a trade for the young slot cornerback.
