It's been known for a while that Barcelona goalkeeper Iñaki Peña was going to leave the club in this summer transfer window one way or another.

There have been numerous links and there's been particularly strong links to Italian side Como, but it seems like another club is close to securing the 26-year-old's services.

Sport is now reporting that Peña is close to a move to recently promoted La Liga side, Elche.

Peña to Elche

The Spanish keeper seems to have chosen Elche as his destination despite having interest from other teams. He also will renew for an additional three years adding on to the one year he still has left keeping him tied to Barca until 2029.

It's an interesting move for Peña as choosing to go to a newly promoted side is risky because of the potential to go back down. Elche aren't a regular promoted side though, as they play possession football and managed a great result in their first game with a draw against Betis where they looked like the better side.

It's unknown how long the loan move will be for, but it'll help Barcelona register Wojciech Szczesny. This would leave just Roony Bardghji left to register as Gerard Martin is also expected to be registered soon.

The details aren't resolved yet, but this is a move that should benefit both parties involved. For Peña, it's a move that finally sees him go somewhere where he can be a guaranteed starter and prove his worth. For Barcelona, they get some financial relief to register players and loan out a player who doesn't have a place on the team.
