Kohli made the announcement via Instagram earlier this week, just days after Rohit Sharma also stepped away from the format. With 9,230 runs from 123 Tests, 30 centuries and an average of 46.85, Kohli walks away as one of India’s greatest ever Test players.

What did Michael Atherton say about Virat Kohli?

Speaking to Sky Sports, Atherton said Kohli was a player you simply could not ignore when he was at the crease. His presence, energy and intensity set him apart every single time he took the field.

“You couldn't take your eyes off Kohli, that's what I always felt like watching him. It was noticeable to me that in his retirement statement, he referenced the challenges that Test cricket had given him. I loved watching him play every day of his 123 Tests. He put his heart and soul into Test cricket, and that energy and passion never seemed to dim,” Atherton said.

What's next for team India?

Kohli’s absence leaves a major void in India’s Test setup -- especially with a demanding England tour around the corner. The number four spot is now up for grabs and whoever steps in will carry the burden of following legends like Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar.

“We're not sure who is going to take his place at No. 4 yet, and you kind of pity the person who has to follow,” Atherton added.

Who will captain India in Tests after Rohit Sharma?

With Kohli and Rohit both out of the picture, India is now in transition. According to recent reports, Shubman Gill is being considered for the captaincy even though Jasprit Bumrah served as vice-captain during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
