India’s Test team is officially at a crossroads. With Rohit Sharma announcing his retirement from the longest format ahead of the crucial England tour -- the captaincy must now pass to the next man in line.

The timing couldn’t be more important -- an overseas series starting June 20 looms and the selectors must make a quick yet careful decision. Rohit revealed his decision on Instagram where he thanked fans and called it an "honour" to represent India in Tests.

The contenders for the captaincy are no surprise. Five names are doing the rounds -- each with varying degrees of experience, recent form and leadership credibility.

Let’s take a look at their chances, based on current performances, leadership exposure and reported buzz.

Who will be India's next Test captain? Odds and predictions

Shubman Gill – 80% chance

At just 25, Shubman Gill leads the race. He has already captained India in T20Is and is currently captaining Gujarat Titans in the IPL.

Gill has been groomed for captaincy for years with stints as Punjab’s captain. His appointment would mark a clear shift toward long-term thinking.

Jasprit Bumrah – 65% chance

Jasprit Bumrah has the pedigree and presence to lead. He has captained India in England before -- during the rescheduled fifth Test in 2022 and -- again this year in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

His on-field command and tactical intelligence are unquestionable. Though injury concerns could weigh against him.

Bumrah took 8/72 in Perth and won Player of the Match while captaining India.

KL Rahul – 40% chance

KL Rahul has Test captaincy experience and recent form on his side. He has won two out of three Tests as captain and is seen as a calm, composed figure.

However, fitness issues and inconsistent availability make his case weaker than Gill or Bumrah. Rahul led India in a 2-0 win over Bangladesh and a Test in South Africa.

Rishabh Pant – 25% chance

Rishabh Pant is still rebuilding after his long injury layoff. While he has shown captaincy promise in the IPL and a short T20I stint -- selectors might hesitate to hand him the Test captaincy just yet.

He remains one for the future. Mohammad Kaif previously endorsed Pant as Rohit’s Test successor.

Virat Kohli – 10% chance

Virat Kohli is India's most successful Test captain but unlikely to return. Age and the fact that he stepped down voluntarily in 2022 make a comeback improbable.

His experience is unmatched but India’s eyes are firmly set on the future. Kohli led India in 68 Tests, winning 40.
