Shubman Gill recently kicked off his career as India's Test captain in style, with 754 runs in 10 innings of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.

Following an excellent tour of England, Gill was named as the captain of the North Zone for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, which will mark the beginning of the 2025/26 domestic season.

The 25-year-old was set to lead a team that consisted of the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Anshul Kamboj from August 28 in their clash against the East Zone in Bengaluru.

However, just days before the competition, Gill's participation is now in question after he informed the BCCI and team management of his illness.

Will Shubman Gill play Duleep Trophy?

According to Cricbuzz, the North Zone selection committee, consisting of Chetan Sharma, Nikhil Chopra, Amit Uniyal, Mithun Minhas, Raj Kumar, and Mukesh Kumar, is expecting the India skipper to skip the tournament, but the official word on the issue is awaited.

The physios have reportedly examined Gill on August 22, and his health report has been submitted to BCCI as he continues to rest and recover at his home in Chandigarh.

The batter was planning to participate in the Duleep Trophy opener from August 28 to 31 before joining the India camp for the upcoming Asia Cup, where he is named as a deputy to Suryakumar Yadav.

Who will replace Shubman Gill as North Zone captain if he is ruled out?

In case he skips the FC competition, Haryana's Ankit Kumar will take over the reins of North Zone, while the Punjab batter will directly join India's squad for the Asia Cup.
