In the second innings, the West Indies openers, Matthews and Qiana Joseph, put up an 88-run opening stand with the home side managing to score 180/6 in 32 overs before rain interrupted play.
With no further play possible, West Indies were declared winners by D/L method and took a 1-0 lead in the series.
As the series moves to the second ODI, South Africa needs a win to level the series and force a decider in the final match. Meanwhile, the West Indies will hope to quickly wrap up the series and shift focus to the T20Is.
