The San Francisco 49ers have signed kicker Eddy Pineiro, bringing in the veteran after they cut ties with Jake Moody.

Moody was waived by the 49ers on Tuesday in the wake of a nightmare showing in San Francisco's season-opening win over the Seattle Seahawks.

San Francisco prevailed 17-13 in Seattle despite Moody's struggles, which saw him miss a chip shot 27-yard field goal and have another from 36 yards blocked.

Moody went one of three on field goals, with that performance the final straw for the 49ers as they lost patience with the 2023 third-round pick, whose difficulties followed a 2024 season in which he missed 10 field goals and an extra point.

49ers hoping Eddy will prove steady

With 16 missed field goals in 32 regular-season games, Moody was far too inconsistent for the 49ers to be able to stick with him.

Pineiro, by marked contrast, has missed 15 field goals in his entire pro career. He has never missed more than five in a single season, and has a career field goal percentage of 88.1.

In 2024, Pineiro went 22 for 26 on field goals for the Carolina Panthers and was 33 for 35 on extra points.

Even with a host of injuries on offense, the 49ers moved the ball well against the Seahawks, and theirs remains an attack with an extremely high floor because of the play-calling acumen of head coach Kyle Shanahan.

However, since his selection, Moody has too often limited the 49ers' point-scoring upside, leaving San Francisco looking foolish for trusting him to be an asset with his ability to make long-distance kicks.

With the 49ers eyeing a return to Super Bowl contention, they need reliability, and they will hope that is what Pineiro will provide.
