Discussion around Chelsea's current goalkeeping situation has intensified recently in the wake of The Blues' defeat away to Manchester United last weekend.

Enzo Maresca's side were immediately placed into a challenging position in the contest as Robert Sanchez was given a straight red card in the fifth minute.

The Chelsea keeper brought down United forward Bryan Mbeumo, who was deemed to be in a goal-scoring situation by the officials.

This forced Maresca into a mass reshuffle of his team's set-up as three substitutions were made not long after and the team was on the back foot for large periods of the match.

Sanchez was criticised for his poor judgement and reading of the situation that got him disciplined. The incident came after a summer of speculation linking Chelsea with a new goalkeeper.

The Premier League club were linked with a move for AC Milan's Mike Maignan, but nothing came of that. However, talk has persisted of the club requiring an upgrade on Sanchez.

Former Chelsea player wanted club to sign top shot-stopper

In the wake of Sanchez's error against United, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has mentioned how it was a mistake for his old side to not bring in a new player between the sticks.

In particular, he believes it was a mistake to not try and sign Gianluigi Donnarumama.

"I've said it so many times. (Chelsea) should have brought in a top goalkeeper," the two-time Premier League winner said on The Obi One Podcast.

"We see what Donnarumma is doing now at Manchester City. He was the keeper out there. People have talked about the wage structure but you can find way around that.

The Italian keeper was available for transfer this past summer after Paris Saint Germain surprisingly deemed him surplus to requirements.

Manchester City were the club to take advantage of the situation and snapped up the Italian for an initial fee of just £26m.

In just a few appearances for City, the new Yashin Trophy holder has already shown why he is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers on the planet and perhaps why other clubs should have attempted to acquire him.

Mikel went on to assess how Chelsea's league title chances sit after not prioritising a new keeper in the recent transfer window.

"I've said it many times from last season. It's going to be incredibly hard for us to win the Premier League with the goalkeeper we have right now."

Sanchez will be available for selection again after serving his one-match suspension in Chelsea's win over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night (September 24).
