Arne Slot unhappy about constant media talk over Liverpool's big summer spending image

Arne Slot has hit back at the constant remarks which have been made about Liverpool's high-spending summer transfer window from the media.

The Reds were strongly intent on building on last season's title-winning Premier League campaign as the club splashed out nearly £450m on new players over the summer.

Among the major deals that Liverpool completed were the £125m capture of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United and the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m.

Also, Hugo Ekitike joined the Merseyside club from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79m.

Due to the current Premier League holders pouring heavy investment into the squad, pundits have put the pressure on Liverpool to deliver more silverware, and are often heard referencing the club's large summer spending amount.

Liverpool supporters have been coming to their team's defence, often pointing out that the club only purchased Federico Chiesa for £10m in the 2024 summer transfer window.

Also, fans have mentioned that the club recouped over £200m in player sales this summer, with Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Jarrell Quansah being among the notable names to depart Anfield.

In his pre-match news conference ahead of facing Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday (September 17), Slot addressed the constant media discussion about his team's recent spending.

"There is so much focus on our new signings, especially from pundits that favour some other clubs in the country that cannot stop talking about £450m," the Dutchman stated.

"I repeat £450m, £450m! They forget we have sold (players). If we want to strengthen the squad we need to spend that much money."

The Liverpool manager then claimed that there is nothing unjust about the club's spending spree.

"All the money we have spent, we generated ourselves by selling, and by winning the league after we didn't buy anyone at all (in summer 2024)."

However, Slot is not letting himself get overly upset about what pundits have been saying, and believes there is a good reason for the frequent talk over The Reds' signings.

"I think it is only a compliment that people tell everyone we have spent so much because that tells you the players we brought in are seen as very good," Slot claimed.

Among the new major signings to not feature yet for Liverpool is Isak, as the striker is not at full match sharpness after missing pre-season with Newcastle.

Slot confirmed that the Swedish international would be available to make his debut at Anfield against Atletico.
