Ruben Amorim did not want to take over at Manchester United mid-way through last season, but it was a now-or-never scenario.

This gave the United manager somewhat of a free hit in the last campaign, and he would then be judged on what happens after he had a pre-season to implement his style of play.

This season has started disastrously for the Red Devils; they have won just once in the Premier League, when they needed an added-time penalty to defeat newly promoted Burnley

United suffered an embarrassing defeat to Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup and were further humiliated in the Manchester derby last weekend.

Following the defeat to Manchester City, Amorim said the United hierarchy would have to sack him if they wanted to change the system.

This is not the first time that Amorim has made an emotional outburst, which reflects his unhappiness at Old Trafford.

Could Ruben Amorim return to Portuguese football?

Benfica is having a presidential election this year, with candidates plotting ambitious plans for the club.

Sport Bild has reported that the candidate, Cristovao Carvalho, wants to bring Jurgen Klopp to the club. However, it is unrealistic that the former Liverpool manager would leave his job at Red Bull for Benfica.

According to The Times, Joao Noronha Lopes, who is also in the running to be the next president, would like Amorim to return to Benfica.

Amorim played for Benfica and is a fan of the club. He won two league titles as the manager of their rivals, Sporting CP.

Amorim has not been able to replicate his success in Portugal with United. He has looked like a frustrated figure who may want an escape route from the club.
