Newcastle United have revived negotiations with Brentford as they push to sign striker Yoane Wissa in a deal worth up to £40 million.

Earlier this month, the Magpies had seen a £30m bid for Wissa promptly rejected, but their latest offer is believed to include a £35 million initial fee plus £5 million in add-ons.

However, sources from BBC Sport suggest that Newcastle’s improved package still falls short of Brentford’s valuation of the 28-year-old.

Talks had previously stalled in early August, but discussions were reignited after Wissa held a meeting with Bees owner Matthew Benham on Tuesday (August 19).

According to Fabrizio Romano, Wissa has his heart set on a move to St. James’ Park.

The DR Congo forward made his feelings doubly clear earlier this week when he cryptically removed all Brentford references from his Instagram account.

Wissa scored 19 Premier League goals last season and has been pushing for a move since returning early from Brentford’s pre-season tour in July.

BBC Sport reported that the striker even threatened not to play or train if the club refused to sanction his exit, before later resuming first-team duties while making his desire to make the step up to Newcastle completely clear.

He did not feature in the Bees’ Premier League opening loss against Nottingham Forest, and all signs indicate that he will not be part of the squad for their upcoming match against Aston Villa on Saturday (August 23).

Brentford will certainly be reluctant to lose both Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo – who joined Manchester United earlier this summer – without securing substantial fees for reinvestment.

The Bees recently signed Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth, which had been viewed as a trigger for Wissa’s departure, though the clubs still remain far apart on valuation for the final fee.

It has already been a summer of upheaval in west London, with Brentford also losing pivotal pieces in manager Thomas Frank, who has taken charge of Tottenham and captain Christian Norgaard, who has joined Arsenal.
