Next Rangers Manager Odds: Dyche or Gerrard - Who will come in if Martin is sacked? image

It has been a woeful start to the domestic season for Rangers and for Russell Martin, despite last weekend's late show at Livingston. In the league, they remain nine points off the pace set by surprise leaders Hearts.

The club's troubles continued in Europe too last week as they suffered a 1-0 loss at Ibrox against Genk in the opening match of their league phase campaign in the UEFA Europa League.

The only reason they are in Europe’s second-tier club competition is because they suffered a 9-1 aggregate loss to Genk’s Belgian compatriots Club Brugge in the playoffs for the Champions League - a humiliating defeat which brought immediate media scrutiny on Martin's job.

Let's look at the latest Rangers odds before Thursday's match against Sturm Graz.

Who is the favourite to be the next Rangers manager?

According to the latest betting odds, the leading candidate to take the job in Glasgow should Martin be relieved of his duties at Ibrox is Sean Dyche (11/4). The former Burnley boss has been out of work since a two-year stint at Everton finished in January 2025.

54-year-old Dyche was previously with Burnley for 10 years (2012-2022) and helped them gain two promotions to the Premier League, with a top-flight high of finishing seventh. He started his career with Watford, managing 49 matches in the 2011/12 season.

Who will be the new Rangers manager?

Sean Dyche might be the bookmakers' favourite but he only holds a narrow edge in the market over one of the club's most successful managers in recent seasons, Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard (3/1) had a remarkable tenure as Rangers manager from 2018 to 2021, most notably marked by an unbeaten championship season in 2020–21.

That 102-point campaign, which broke Celtic’s grip on domestic success, remains well-remembered by supporters. Boasting a 64.8% win rate across all competitions, consistent victories in Old Firm derbies and solid European performances, Gerrard’s achievements at Ibrox can't be discounted.

However, a varied stint at Aston Villa and an unsuccessful period in the Saudi Professional League might be putting the board off calling him back in.

Who are the other contenders?

Danny Rohl remains a live outsider at 5/1. He did an excellent job at Sheffield Wednesday before off-field issues begin to bite him and the club over the summer, leading to a likely relegation this season.

Rohl left the club before the start of the campaign after spending the majority of the summer reportedly touting himself to potential suitors in the Championship, and even being linked with Rangers.

Gary O’Neil (6/1 chance) was perhaps harshly sacked by AFC Bournemouth at the time but the club have since improved under Andoni Iraola. Arguably, the same thing then happened with Vitor Pereira improving Wolverhampton Wanderers last season after O'Neil's departure.

Now 42 years of age, O’Neil has been without a job since last December, when he left Molineux with Wolves sitting rock-bottom in the Premier League table and destined for the drop.

Meanwhile, the 'Special One' Jose Mourinho has previously said he would be open to managing Rangers. The Portuguese coach was recently sacked by Fenerbahce after their failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

A move to Ibrox now seems unlikely as, in the meantime, the former Chelsea manager has since taken the job at Benfica, replacing Bruno Lage in Lisbon.

Steven Gerrard’s Record at Rangers

The best, and perhaps only, managerial success for Steven Gerrard has come in Glasgow, with the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership title.

That was his only trophy won in his three-and-a-bit-year stint at Rangers. During his time at the club, they played in 193 matches with Gerrard coming away with a 64.8% win rate and some excellent results in the UEFA Europa League.
