A former Tottenham Hotspur player has defended Daniel Levy's spell as the club's executive chairman in the wake of a major board reshuffle in North London.

Levy stepped down from his role last week at Spurs in what came as a major surprise to everyone in the football world.

The decision brought an end to a 25-year stay at the Premier League club for Levy, as Spurs now seek to go in a new direction and strive to "deliver long-term sporting success."

Levy will not be replaced directly as the role he held at the club will be removed, but Peter Charrington will go from operating as non-executive director to the newly formed position of non-executive chairman.

The news of Levy's exit was welcomed by many Spurs supporters, as they had grown frustrated with the club's lack of ambition in the transfer market in recent years, as well as just the two trophies being delivered in Levy's tenure.

Despite fans holding Levy responsible for the club's shortcomings and wanting him out of the club, former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp came to the businessman's defence in the wake of last week's news.

Ex-Spurs player on Levy's tenure at the North London club

Following Redknapp's strong defence of Levy, another former employee of the North London club has praised the job that the outgoing executive chairman did.

Aaron Lennon, who played as a winger for Spurs between 2005-2015, disagrees with how some Spurs fans have celebrated Levy's departure due to how the club has evolved.

"I personally think Daniel Levy did a fantastic job. We were a mid-table team. Look what he's transformed the club to. Probably the best training ground, the best stadium in the world," said Lennon on talkSPORT's Premier League All Access Podcast.

Touching on the 17-year trophy drought the team experienced prior to last season's Europa League triumph, Lennon stated: "I think Daniel gets made to be a bit of a scapegoat in that situation."

"People forget (Spurs) spent quite a lot of money. I think they bought poorly, but Daniel doesn't buy the players," the former Spurs player explained.

Signings to have performed poorly for Spurs in recent years include Tanguy Ndombele, Bryan Gil, Radu Dragusin, Matt Doherty and Ryan Sessegnon.
