Tottenham Hotspur announced on Friday (October 3) that the club had signed one of its current midfielders to a new contract.

After reports of a new deal being negotiated, Uruguay international Rodrigo Bentancur has officially put pen to paper on a new long-term deal with the Premier League side.

It is not yet known what the exact length of the new deal is, but the 28-year-old is set to remain in North London for the foreseeable future.

Bentancur is evidently part of manager Thomas Frank's future plans and will continue to remain a key piece in the Spurs midfield for years to come.

The Uruguayan, who joined from Juventus in January 2022, was set to see his existing deal run out at the end of the current season, so there was a desire from all parties to agree on new terms as soon as possible.

Bentancur has made 122 appearances for Spurs so far, which includes his full 90-minute display in last season's Europa League final triumph over Manchester United in Bilbao.

Bentancur speaks on his contract extension

After confirming his stay with Frank's side, Bentancur explained the reasons behind his latest decision.

"I feel really good and I'm very happy to continue my story with this fantastic club," the midfielder told Spurs' official channels.

"My family are happy, I have fantastic friends and team-mates who work hard every day. I love this club and feel really good here," he added.

Bentancur then displayed optimism for the future at Spurs and touched on what the club can achieve.

"Winning the Europa League was a fantastic moment and we want to build on this now, to win more trophies. We have a new head coach, a new captain and I want to enjoy many more years at the club."

Frank expressed delight with the contract renewal and mentioned exactly what the Uruguayan can continue to offer his side.

"I'm extremely happy that Rodrigo has committed his future to the club. It shows his belief in what we are building here and that we are starting a journey which we hope will be really special," the Spurs boss stated.

"Rodri is a big part of that. He's a fantastic midfielder who can dictate games and be the glue that holds the team together. He also has the ability to arrive in the penalty area, create goals and score too."

After draws in the past week with Wolves and Bodo/Glimt, Bentancur and his Spurs teammates will be looking to return to winning ways away against Leeds United on Saturday (October 4).
