Surprise pace-setter in Singapore as Williams catches fire in Practice 1 image

Action is underway in Singapore, as Fernando Alonso surprisingly tops the timesheets in Practice 1 in the Aston Martin - beating out Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

It was the first time this season the two-time World Champion set the pace, after revealing that 2026 could be his last year in Formula 1

He went faster by 0.150 seconds to Leclerc, with Max Verstappen rounding out the top three.

McLaren duo, and championship rivals, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris finished fifth and sixth in the session, with Lewis Hamilton in fourth.

It was a tough session for Alex Albon as his Williams caught on fire, due to a brake issue, early in the session meaning he got no flying laps in.

Despite Alonso's fastest time, Practice 1 conditions are starkly different to Qualifying and the Grand Prix itself.

Those sessions will take place at night under the lights in slightly cooler conditions - although temperatures can reach up to 60 degrees in the cockpit.

So the timings of the first session may not be indicative of what's to come.

Who will succeed under the lights in Singapore?

Max Verstappen will look to continue his winning streak after back-to-back wins in Monza and Baku - but Singapore isn't his best suited track.

The Red Bulls don't tend to excel as they would hope to at Marina Bay Sands, and it is the only circuit Verstappen hasn't won at on the F1 calendar.

But with recent performance, there could be a turnaround for the four-time champion.

McLaren is expected to dominate this weekend, and despite the first session's results, Norris and Piastri are set to look the fastest and could even secure the constructor's title for the team.

Hopes will also be high for Ferrari. As of late, they've impressed in Practice sessions but have not capitalised in qualifying, making their races harder.

However the Singapore streets have been kind to them in the past and could be again this weekend.

Qualifying will be key for all the drivers, with Singapore's overtaking capabilities more difficult and risky than most tracks.

It's all to play for on Saturday.
