NFL London final score, results: Wentz late show lifts Vikings over Browns image

JUMP TO:

Carson Wentz hit Jordan Addison for a game-winning touchdown with 25 seconds remaining as the Minnesota Vikings improved to 3-2 with a dramatic 21-17 win over the Cleveland Browns.

With Wentz playing behind a severely banged-up offensive line for the Vikings and the Browns starting rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, a defensive struggle was widely expected at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And those expectations were realised, though Gabriel gave the Browns the lead on his second drive, the Browns making the most of a fumble from Jordan Mason with a seven-play, 47-yard drive that was capped when Gabriel found fellow rookie Harold Fannin for a one-yard touchdown.

The Vikings responded in spectacular fashion, running back Cam Akers taking a direct snap and finding a wide-open Josh Oliver for a 32-yard touchdown as the trick play paid dividends.

Defense took over thereafter, with the next six possessions resulting in punts, that sequence ended when the Browns went for 58 yards on 14 plays on a series that ended with an Andre Szmyt field goal.

That gave the Browns a 10-7 lead at the half, with the Vikings’ concerns heightened by a shoulder injury to Wentz.

Wentz emerged for the second half with his shoulder in a harness, but he battled through that adversity to immediately lead a go-ahead touchdown drive, completing passes of 21 and 15 yards to Justin Jefferson and Addison before Mason’s three-yard touchdown plunge.

Cleveland responded in kind, though, Gabriel throwing his second touchdown pass at the end of a 13-play, 74-yard drive as he fired over the middle to find David Njoku for a nine-yard score.

Yet the Browns paid the price for failing to take advantage of Vikings miscues, as a Zavier Scott fumble and a missed Will Reichard field goal went unpunished.

It was their inability to make the most of the latter gift that proved telling.

The Browns took just 22 seconds off the clock after getting the ball with 03:27 remaining, and preserved a Vikings timeout when Gabriel fired incomplete on third down.

And the Vikings ensured they punished the Browns, with a 14-yard completion from Wentz to T.J. Hockenson followed by a 21-yard hook-up with Jefferson to put Minnesota on the edge of the red zone.

Wentz moved the ball down to the Cleveland 12, and then rounded off a gusty effort with a perfectly placed throw to Addison to beat Cleveland’s zone coverage, lofting the ball over the head of Denzel Ward and into hands of Addison in the corner of the endzone.

Gabriel got the Browns into position for a Hail Mary, but the prayer was not answered.

Wentz finished 25-34 for 236 yards and a touchdown, with Jefferson catching seven of 11 targets for 123 yards. If the Vikings can get healthy and Addison, who was benched for the first quarter, can provide a consistent impact going forward, Minnesota can still be a force in the NFC with the high floor Jefferson gives the offense.

The Browns can afford to be quietly encouraged by what Gabriel (19-33, 190 yards and two touchdowns) produced, while Quinshon Judkins was impressive again in the backfield with 23 carries for 110 yards. However, at 1-4, it is clear the Browns will not be contending this year, even if there is hope for the future.

Browns vs. Vikings live updates, highlights from NFL London in Week 5

Final: Browns 17-21 Vikings

5:42 p.m. — The Vikings win a nail-biter and are unbeaten in five games in London in their history. They improve to 3-2, a crucial win for their playoff aspirations. The Browns drop to 1-4, and any remaining hopes of them seriously contending for the postseason look to be over.

5:41 p.m. — Gabriel goes short to Jamari Thrash but he is tackled inbounds. Vikings win!

5:40 p.m. — Gabriel's heave to the endzone is picked off, but the Vikings called timeout before the snap! Cleveland will get another shot.

5:39 p.m. — Gabriel hits Isaiah Bond for 23 yards. Seven seconds left. Hail Mary time.

5:36 p.m. TOUCHDOWN VIKINGS!

Addison is left wide open and Wentz finds him for a 12-yard touchdown in the corner of the endzone!

Reichard nails the key extra point and the Vikings have a four-point lead to protect with just 25 seconds left

Browns 17-21 Vikings

5:34 p.m. — 3rd-and-3. Wentz completes a lay-up to Jordan Addison off the play-fake. The Vikings are on the Cleveland 17 with one timeout remaining.

5:30 p.m. — T.J. Hockenson moves the Vikings into Browns territory, before Jefferson comes down with another beauty with Denzel Ward in excellent coverage. Timeout Cleveland with the Vikings on the Browns' 27-yard line.

5:27 p.m. — It's the two-minute warning. The Vikings have the ball on their own 38 on second-and-4.

5:24 p.m. — The Browns go backwards and, on third-and-11, Gabriel sails a throw miles over his receiver. The incompletion saves the Vikings a timeout, so they have one left and 3:05 remaining plus the two-minute warning to rescue this game. The drive starts at the 20 following the Browns punt.

5:21 p.m. — 3rd and 11 and Wentz is sacked by Maliek Collins! The Vikings punt and it's returned to the Cleveland 41-yard-line. The Browns have the chance to put this one away with one more impressive drive.

5:18 p.m. —Jordan Mason explodes to the 45-yard line of the Browns but the play is coming back for a hold. Under five minutes remaining now. The Vikings can't afford a continuation of the errors that have hampered their offense at this stage in the game.

5:14 p.m. — Gabriel sails a third-down throw out of bounds and the Browns punt. They appear to make an excellent special teams play to down the ball at the Minnesota one-yard line, but the officials rule a touchback. The recovering player's foot touched the goal line as he dived on the ball.

A big break for the Vikings, who start from the 20-yard line instead.

5:07 p.m. — Wentz is sacked on third down and the Vikings are forced to attempt a 51-yard field goal. It sails wide to the right. The Browns remain in the lead!

5:04 p.m. — A circus catch from Justin Jefferson for a gain of 39 yards!

5:03 p.m. — Jordan Mason is back in the game for the Vikings on this drive.

4:59 p.m. — Cleveland can't do anything with the turnover, as Gabriel is sacked on third down by Ivan Pace.

4:54 p.m. — TURNOVER! Xavier Scott fumbles the ball on the first play of the drive for the Vikings, and the Browns recover. Cleveland defensive tackle Shelby Harris is flagged for a personal foul after the play, so the field position isn't quite as good as it might have been, but it's still a huge swing.

4:52 p.m. — The Browns cannot convert on third-and-1, the punt is returned to the Browns' 42-yard line.

3rd Quarter

4:49 p.m. — A Judkins rush gets the Browns some breathing room and brings the end of the third quarter.

4:45 p.m. — 3rd-and-17 and Wentz comes under immediate pressure. He scrambles but is hauled down from behind by Myles Garrett.

The Vikings' punt rolls to the two-yard line and a holding penalty will move it back to the Cleveland one-yard line. The longest field possible for Dillon Gabriel on the next drive.

4:41 p.m. — Wentz is sacked on his first play of the subsequent drive by Alex Wright. It's a loss of eight yards and the next play goes for no gain. Jordan Mason is hurt at the end of it.

4:35 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN BROWNS! 3rd-and-Goal and Gabriel finds David Njoku over the middle to restore the Cleveland lead!

Browns 17-14 Vikings

4:33 p.m. — Judkins is stuffed for no gain on third down but the Browns go for it on fourth-and-1 and convert with a Judkins rush to the Minnesota nine-yard-line.

4:30 p.m. — An 18-yard catch-and-run by Judkins has the Browns on the Minnesota 20.

4:29 p.m. — The Browns have a nice drive going on the ground, leaning on Quinshon Judkins and Jerome Ford to move them down the field.

4:22 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN VIKINGS! Mason punches it in on 2nd-and-Goal from the three-yard line.

Browns 10-14 Vikings

4:21 p.m. — Jordan Mason gets around the edge and down to the six-yard line. 1st-and-Goal Vikings.

4:19 p.m. — The Vikings are in business. They move into Browns territory after Justin Jefferson draws a pass interference call on Greg Newsome before Jefferson makes a 21-yard reception.

Jordan Addison then makes a catch for another first down.

4:17 p.m. — Wentz is wearing a harness on his left shoulder.

4:15 p.m. — Wentz is back out on the sideline to start the second half. A sigh of relief for Minnesota.

Halftime

4:10 p.m. — The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium crowd is being treated to a halftime show by Raye.  Dillon Gabriel has hit the right notes for most of his first start so far. He's gone 13 of 21 for 102 yards and a touchdown.

4:01 p.m. — So that's halftime, and it's been the defensive struggle we expected, with the Browns holding a slight edge. More worryingly for the Vikings is the shoulder injury to Carson Wentz, which could lead them to turn to Max Brosmer at quarterback.

2nd Quarter

3:56 p.m. — A false start penalty pushes the Browns back to the 13-yard line on third down. Dillon Gabriel tosses the ball out of the back of the endzone.

Andre Szmyt nails the subsequent field goal, and a kneel down from Max Brosmer brings the half to an end.

Browns 10-7 Vikings

3:52 p.m. — A superb drive from Gabriel so far, the Browns are in the red zone!

3:49 p.m. — It's a shoulder injury for Wentz. He's questionable to return.

3:47 p.m. — More potential injury problems for Minnesota as Carson Wentz heads to the blue medical tent.

Meanwhile, the Browns convert on a fourth down to keep their drive alive.

3:44 p.m. — We've reached the two-minute warning. Not a thriller.

3:42 p.m. — Wentz comes under heavy pressure on third down as another Vikings series goes nowhere. His scramble comes up short of the sticks. The Vikings punt to the Cleveland 34.

3:37 p.m. — It looks to be incomplete on replay.

And it is! Challenge successful. The Browns will have to punt.

3:36 p.m. — A huge completion on third down from Dillon Gabriel to Jerry Jeudy, but it is being challenged!

3:31 p.m. — A spectacular scrambling completion from Carson Wentz on third down is negated by offsetting penalties.

3:25 p.m. — Dillon Gabriel almost scrambles for the first down deep in his own territory, but he's hauled down just short of the sticks, the Browns punt.

3:20 p.m. — Excellent work from the Browns defense to shut down the pitch play to Jordan Mason on third down. The Vikings punt to the Cleveland 11.

3:17 p.m. — The Vikings fail to convert on third down, but the drive is extended for illegal contact against the Browns.

1st Quarter

3:08 p.m. — That's the end of the first quarter!

3:07 p.m. — Quinshon Judkins explodes down the left side for a 52-yard score, but it's nullified as the Browns are called for holding.

3:05 p.m. — That man Fannin again as Gabriel converts on third down for the Browns.

3:00 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN VIKINGS! Trickery for Minnesota ties it up! They line up running back Cam Akers as the quarterback. Akers takes the snap and fakes the run to the right, before lofting the ball to a wide-open Josh Oliver for a 32-yard score.

Browns 7-7 Vikings

2:55 p.m. — A big third-down connection from Carson Wentz to Justin Jefferson on third down goes for 15 yards and keeps the Vikings' drive alive.

It's followed up by a 12-yarder to Jefferson and the Vikings have some momentum.

2:49 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN BROWNS! After converting on fourth down, the Browns move the ball down to the Minnesota four-yard-line. Dillon Gabriel fakes the run to Judkins and finds fellow rookie Harold Fannin in the flat.

Browns 7-0 Vikings

2:45 p.m. — Browns rookie Quinshon Judkins picks his way through the traffic for a 32-yard rush!

2:42 p.m. — Turnover! The Vikings did have a nice drive going, but Jordan Mason fumbles and the Browns recover at the Minnesota 47.

2:37 p.m. — Gabriel sails a third-down pass over the head of Isaiah Bond and the Browns will punt.

2:35 p.m. — Dillon Gabriel's first pass is a 12-yard completion to David Njoku.

2:34 p.m. — The Browns start at the 40-yard line after the Vikings get the kick-off all wrong.

Pregame

2:32 p.m. — National anthems completed. We're ready to go!

2:26 p.m. — Myles Garrett firing up the troops for the Browns. He already has four sacks this season.

2:12 p.m. — Whatever happens today, Gabriel will make history. He is set to become the first rookie quarterback to make his first start in an international game.

2:07 p.m. — The Vikings have a blitz rate of 39.8 percent this season, the third-highest in the NFL. Expect their defensive coordinator to continue in the same manner as he attempts to unsettle Gabriel.

2:01 p.m. — Under half an hour to go until kick-off, and the Browns look ready.

1:56 p.m. — More detail here on Browns rookies making their debut since 1999. A lot of history against Dillon Gabriel.

1:46 p.m. — There's Browns royalty in the building in Tottenham. Cleveland could certainly use Joe Thomas in his prime for this one.

1:37 p.m. — Justin Jefferson was spectacular last week in Dublin, catching 10 passes for 126 yards in a losing effort. The game's best receiver will undoubtedly be the focal point again of the attack again this week.

1:24 p.m. — The Browns and Vikings have faced off in London before, with Minnesota triumphing 33-16 at Twickenham in the 2017 season.

1:15 p.m. — To add context to the scale of the task facing Dillon Gabriel, no Browns rookie quarterback has won on their debut start since the team was re-formed in 1999.

1:07 p.m. — The Vikings being without Van Ginkel will be a huge boost to the Browns, whose hopes of a successful offensive performance have also been bolstered by the return of right tackle Jack Conklin, who has missed the last three games with an elbow injury.

1:04 p.m. — In addition to being without quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the Vikings are without several members of their offensive line, while the absence of Andrew Van Ginkel is a big-time blow to their pass rush.

1:00 p.m. — The two teams have released their inactives.

12:51 p.m. — There's plenty of star power on show in north London this afternoon, but it's probably unwise to expect a lot of points. Cleveland's defense ranks first in the NFL in yards per play allowed (4.1), with Minnesota 10th (4.9)

12:43 p.m. — Browns punter Corey Bojórquez is clearly keen to get any locals in the crowd on side.

12:38 p.m. — The Vikings lead the all-time regular-season series with the Browns 11-5. However, Cleveland won the last meeting between the two teams, a 14-7 victory in the 2021 campaign.

12:30 p.m. — Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz is dressed fittingly for the occasion. He'll need to improve considerably on his Dublin performance, especially against a ferocious Browns defensive front.

12:20 p.m. — Dillon Gabriel will have a huge challenge on his hands today against an aggressive Vikings defense.

12:16 p.m. — Tottenham Hotspur stadium is looking resplendent for the first London game of the year.
