Lions’ overall test record against Australia

The British and Irish Lions are an invitational squad made up of the best players from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. This year, the 38-man squad boasts seven Scots, 13 English, 16 Irish and two Welshmen.

The squad, captained by Saracens’ Maro Itoje, is made of British rugby’s current best and is full of first-time Lions, including youngest player, Henry Pollock. Owen Farrell was the last to join the squad down under after he replaced an injured Elliot Daly at the beginning of July.

The Lions’ journey Down Under started over 120 years ago in 1899, where Australia lost to the tourists 13 - 3 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Since that inaugural match, 23 Test matches have been played between the two sides, with the Lions emerging victorious from 17 of them, and the Wallabies winning six. They most recently faced each other in 2013, when the Lions won the series 2- 1.

The Lions’ track record Down Under is significantly more favorable than against the other Southern Hemisphere nations they tour on a four-year rotation, New Zealand and Argentina. In fact, the last time that the Lions’ celebrated a Test series victory outside of Australia was all the way back in 1997 against South Africa, where they won 2-1.

Lions’ series results against Australia

Of their nine tours to Australia, the Lions have won seven and lost two, with a total of 23 games being played between the two sides over the Tour's 126-year history.
