Red Sox predicted to go in-house for a replacement if superstar Alex Bregman walks in free agency image

The Boston Red Sox have truly appreciated everything they’ve received from Alex Bregman, but there’s a chance he walks this offseason. If he does, the Sox will need to find a qualified replacement.

Fansided’s Stephen Parello believes that unlike how most teams trade or look at the market, the Sox will stay in-house, and let Marcelo Mayer of the Big Three take over third.

“Boston has been working towards this youth movement for years, and if Bregman proves to be too expensive to retain and Craig Breslow isn't convinced that Suárez can bounce back outside of the Pacific Northwest, the Red Sox could simply pivot to Mayer in the hopes that the youngster is healthy and ready to realize his potential,” Parello wrote.

This season, Mayer was slashing .228/.272/.402/.678 in 44 games before he had season-ending wrist surgery. While it doesn’t seem like he would be a good replacement, Mayer was getting together near the end, so he finally may be able to take the leap.

A good example of this is the rookie star Roman Anthony, who had a horrendous start, but then something finally clicked, and he became the lifeblood of the offense.

Hopefully Mayer has his breakout season next year, even if Bregman stays. Having someone who can play the infield and be a slugger is always needed.
