Shortly after being designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers, veteran reliever Luke Jackson found a new home in Seattle after the Mariners signed him to a minor-league deal on Saturday.
He started the year, signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Texas Rangers. However, the organization dumped him in July, days after which Detroit picked him up on July 26. The 34-year-old threw just 4.2 innings, including five walks and four strikeouts during his time with the Tigers. His struggles relegated him to getting DFA'd on August 8, after which he cleared waivers, was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo, and promptly elected free agency two days later.
Jackson's deal with Detroit was a one-year, MLB contract, covering just the prorated portion of the MLB minimum, while the Rangers will take the remainder of his 2025 salary.
Luke Jackson to join Mariners' affiliate AAA team
As part of his minor league deal with the Mariners, Luke Jackson has been assigned to their Triple-A affiliate, the Tacoma Rainiers, where he'll try to attract major league interest.
The veteran reliever has pitched 10 seasons in MLB, including two stints with the Rangers. However, his best time came when he was part of the 2021 Braves unit, which won it all. He posted a 1.98 ERA over 63.2 innings that season. His career stats sees him posting a 24-16 record for 4.27 ERA and 414 strikeouts.
Only time will tell if an opportunity arises as the season progresses. Or else, it'll be difficult for him to get signed in the offseason.
