The championship trophy in baseball is unlike any other piece of hardware in sports.

The MLB's most coveted prize has been handed to plenty of franchises over MLB's history, given to the team that wins the World Series every season. The piece, highlighted by its circle of flags, has become synonymous with October.

It may not have the allure of the NHL's Stanley Cup, or the NFL's Lombardi Trophy, but it is one of the most coveted prizes that can be given to a championship team. But what is the name of the trophy for the World Series winners?

The Sporting News explains the name and history behind baseball's top trophy.

What is the World Series trophy called?

The hardware handed out to the World Series champions is called the Commissioner's Trophy.

It is the only championship trophy of the four major North American professional leagues to not be named after a person. In addition to the Stanley Cup (named after Lord Stanley of Preston) and the Lombardi Trophy (legendary coach Vince Lombardi), the NBA's champion gets the Larry O'Brien Trophy (former commissioner).

The Commissioner's Trophy has flags representing the 30 MLB teams around the top of it. It was first awarded in 1967, but did not get its current name until 1985.

Who makes the World Series trophy?

Tiffany and Co., a popular jewelry company, is the maker of the Commissioner's Trophy. A new trophy is made every year by the manufacturer.

The original design in 1967 was made by Balfour Jewelers, a company out of Attleboro, Mass. It was originally modeled after Wrigley Field, and the flag design was still in place back then, just with fewer flags for fewer teams.

How much is the World Series trophy worth?

The exact worth of the World Series trophy is not known, however, WSB-TV Atlanta reported in 2021 that the trophy costs anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000 to make.

The original championship trophy from 1967 reportedly cost $2,500 to make at the time. That's the equivalent of over $20,000 in today's market.

What is the World Series trophy made out of?

For the most part, the trophy is made up of sterling silver, the same material used for the NFL's Lombardi Trophy.

However, there are hints of gold on the piece as well, as the flags on the trophy are plated in gold.
