Mariners’ Cal Raleigh eyes historic first — and it’s not AL MVP image

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh is aiming higher than just winning the AL West title or becoming just the first catcher since Buster Posey in 2012 to win an MVP. The Mariners are the only active franchise in MLB history to have never appeared in the World Series.

Raleigh wants to take his franchise to the Fall Classic on the back of a historic season that saw him become the first-ever catcher, switch hitter and only the seventh slugger in MLB history to reach the 60-home run mark. He achieved the milestone by going the yard twice in the 9-2 win against the Colorado Rockies. One day later, after another 6-2 win against the Rockies, Raleigh declared:

"I think most people heard what I said last night. Might as well win the whole f*cking thing."

This quote follows his earlier Instagram post where he shared glimpses into the Mariners' celebration after winning the AL West title. He captioned that post:

"Not done yet. Might as well go win the whole f***ing thing!"

It's safe to say, the Mariners are riding high in confidence and if there was any time for them to lace up their shoes for a deep run in the postseason, it's now.

Cal Raleigh in striking distance to break Aaron Judge's AL HR record

Cal Raleigh has three games left to hit three home runs in order to surpass Aaron Judge and become the player to slug the most home runs in a single season in AL history. Judge hit 62 home runs in 2022 on his way to winning his first MVP.

However, the switch-hitter will have a tough task to get there. They host the Dodgers for a three-game series to wrap up their regular season. The Dodgers boast a high-quality pitching staff, and going the yard won't be easy for the "Big Dumper."

It remains to be seen if Raleigh at least ties Judge's AL home run record over the next three games.
