Could ASU finally have its first Heisman winner in 2025?

For decades, Arizona State football fans have dreamed of seeing one of their own take home the Heisman Trophy. That dream may finally be within reach. Sophomore quarterback Sam Leavitt has been named among the top contenders for college football’s most prestigious award heading into the 2025 season, and his rise is capturing national attention.

Leavitt’s case is strong. Last season, he threw for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns against just six interceptions, proving he could handle the spotlight. His performance as a freshman set the stage for bigger expectations now that ASU is shifting its offense after the loss of star running back Cam Skattebo. As Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports wrote, “Leavitt will need to take on an even larger role… The sophomore should be up to the challenge.”

Heisman races thrive on moments, and Leavitt has the platform. With the Sun Devils facing marquee matchups across the Pac-12, the national spotlight will be there if he continues to deliver. He joins a list of elite names, Arch Manning, Cade Klubnik, Jeremiah Smith, Drew Allar, Garrett Nussmeier, John Mateer, and LaNorris Sellers, making his presence among them no small feat.

Arizona State has never produced a Heisman winner. But if Leavitt’s trajectory continues, 2025 might be the year history is made.
