Sophomore quarterback returns from injury to lead the Gators in Saturday’s opener

Florida fans have been waiting for this moment. DJ Lagway will take command of the Gators’ offense to start the season. After a summer filled with setbacks, the young quarterback is set to start Saturday against Long Island University.

Lagway’s rise hasn’t been smooth. A calf strain sidelined him for most of fall camp, limiting his reps and raising questions about his readiness. On top of that, he missed spring practice recovering from sports hernia surgery. For weeks, Florida’s offense operated without its most promising talent at the helm.

Coach Billy Napier confirmed Lagway is back to full participation. “A lot of times things happen to you that you can’t control, so there’s opportunities to get better as a result of what he’s going through,” Napier said Monday. He added that the adversity has helped Lagway “learn a lot about himself.”

Despite the setbacks, Lagway has already shown what he can do. As a true freshman last season, he posted 1,915 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and a 6-1 record as the Gators’ starter. His ability to extend plays with his legs adds another layer to Florida’s attack.

Now, the spotlight is on. Lagway’s health, and playmaking will be tested right away. If he delivers, the Gators may have their long-term answer under center.
