Shedeur Sanders is an intriguing figure to watch as NFL training camp approaches. He’s putting in the work, hoping to make the Browns' 53-man roster when final decisions are made. However, controversy is brewing around him—not for his play, but due to criticism directed at his father, Deion Sanders, from within the quarterback coaching world.
“The reason I have such a difficult time with Deion is because so many of the things he does, it’s about him rather than other people,” Quincy Avery said. “I think that a lot of people miss that. So we get to see who he is as a person when he has to take on this team without his sons involved.”
Meanwhile, rumors surfaced that Shedeur is on the Toronto Argonauts’ negotiation list, suggesting a potential CFL future. But Sports Illustrated’s Matthew Schmidt is quick to dismiss that idea.
“While there is no guarantee that Sanders will be a smashing success for the Browns right off the bat, it also seems incredibly hard to imagine the signal-caller heading to play football in Canada. Barring a drastic turn of events, it just isn't happening. Right now, Sanders is battling with three other quarterbacks for the starting job in Cleveland, and he seems rather unlikely to be under center heading into Week 1. We all understand that. But it doesn't mean that Sanders will suddenly be banished from the NFL,” Schmidt wrote.
Adding to the uncertainty, a mock draft by Spin Zone’s Sayre Bedinger has the Browns selecting LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier with the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
“They have one of the most uninspiring quarterback battles currently taking place in the NFL with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders. And they have a lot more needs than just the QB position. This is a pivotal year for the Browns to discover core players on their roster going forward,” Bedinger wrote.

If that projection comes true, it would likely eliminate any starting opportunity for Sanders—or even Dillon Gabriel. The Browns have created a crowded and unclear situation in their quarterback room, and all signs point to them addressing it more definitively in the 2026 draft.
