Former Gophers signal caller impressing Vikings’ JJ McCarthy: “I can’t say enough good things about that guy” image

The Minnesota Vikings are all-in on JJ McCarthy as their quarterback of the future, but the battle behind him is quietly becoming one to watch and one name turning heads in camp? Max Brosmer.

The former Minnesota Gopher signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent — and he’s quickly making an impression with both his arm talent and leadership.

“Max is the man,” McCarthy said. “Super detail-oriented. Works his butt off. I can't say enough good things about that guy. An awesome human being, and he can sing pretty well, too. He's got a song out there. Old Jack Daniels. Check it out.”

Brosmer is competing not just with Sam Howell — the former Washington and Seattle quarterback the Vikings acquired during this year’s NFL Draft — but also with Brett Rypien.

Rypien brings experience and depth to the quarterback room, giving the Vikings solid options behind McCarthy after Sam Darnold’s departure in free agency.

A bright spot in an otherwise inconsistent Gophers passing game last season, Brosmer put together a strong senior year. He completed 66.5% of his passes for 2,828 yards, 23 total touchdowns, and just six interceptions.

Kevin O’Connell has built a reputation for developing quarterbacks and getting the most out of his depth chart — and Brosmer is giving him something to work with. He may still be a long shot to crack the 53-man roster, but he’s done nothing to suggest he’s just a camp arm.

Brosmer has taken some early reps in camp and is starting to draw some quiet buzz with the way he handles himself on the field. It’s still early days, but he’s putting in the work and showing he wants to stick around.

Don’t count him out just yet—this undrafted rookie is making the most of every chance he gets.
