Buckle up, Big Ten fans: The reigning-champion Ohio State Buckeyes take on the Illinois Fighting Illini this weekend in what could be an instant-classic of a conference clash.
The undefeated Buckeyes have picked up where they left off last season, ranked No. 1 in the nation and not yet allowing an opponent to score double-digit points. Ryan Day's program has outscored its five opponents by a collective margin of 187-25 and only allowed two touchdowns the entire campaign.
That said, this might be the toughest test of Ohio State's season...at least until it travels to Michigan on Nov. 29. Bret Bielema's Illini may not be undefeated, but they're damn close at 5-1. They're first in the Big Ten in tackles and forced fumbles and fourth in the conference in sacks.
The Buckeyes' offense will be ready. Julian Sayin leads the Big Ten with an 80.2 percent completion rate to go with his 13 TDs and three interceptions. And the stud receiver tandem of Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate has combined for 931 total yards and 11 TDs.
Illinois has some offense, too. QB Luke Altmyer has thrown 12 touchdowns and zero picks. Running backs Ca'Lil Valentine and Kaden Feagin have 754 all-purpose yards and nine TDs between them. Wideout Hank Beatty has 594 total yards and three TDs. Talk about firepower.
Long story short, this should be an epic conference tilt, and the results could very well play a huge part in how the playoffs shape out in a couple months.
