Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer shared an optimistic update on Thursday following surgery on his right hand.

Mateer tweeted, "Thank God for a successful procedure. Dr. Shin is the GOAT. BOOMER SOONER!!"

Mateer underwent surgery to address a broken bone in his right throwing hand sustained during the Sooners' 24-17 win over the Auburn Tigers last weekend. The surgery was performed by renowned hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin, with Oklahoma's coaching staff hopeful for a return later this season.

According to coach Brent Venables, the QB is expected to miss "some game action" and "return to action sometime this season."

Venables said the quarterback was "extremely disappointed" to miss game action.

Mateer played through the injury during the win over Auburn, finishing with 271 passing yards and a game-winning touchdown run.
